No. 6 Greyhounds Sweep Eastern with Pair of Shutouts in Non-Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The No. 6 Moravian College softball team swept another non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon, defeated Eastern University, 12-0 and 9-0, in a pair of five-inning games at Blue & Grey Field.

The Greyhounds, now 23-3 on the season, had 16 hits in the opener with junior center fielder Kat Spilman going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a home run. Freshman second baseman Shannon Brogan was 2-for-2 while senior catcher Janae Matos was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a homer and a double and senior first baseman Jean Markovic went 2-for-3. Freshman right fielder Brooke Wehr homered in her only official at-bat to go with three walks and four RBIs.

Senior Josie Novak tossed a perfect three innings with three strikeouts to improve to 11-2 in the circle while sophomore Paige Lesher allowed three hits and struck out two batters in two innings action.

The Blue and Grey scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. Wehr connected on the first pitch of the inning for a solo home run to left field, her eighth of the season, and after an out, Matos connected on solo homer, her first round-tripper of the season. Markovic finished off the scoring with an RBI single down the left field line to bring in Brogan, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Moravian tacked on three more runs in the second inning to extend the advantage to 6-0. Sophomore left fielder Lauren Goetz led off with inning with a single and Wehr drew a walk. After two outs, Spilman ripped a three-run homer to center field, her fifth home run of the season.

The Hounds added four more runs for a 10-0 edge in the third inning. Markovic and freshman shortstop Maddisen Bieber led off with back-to-back singles before Wehr drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Junior designated player Julia DeMarco connected on an RBI single to bring Markovic across the plate while Matos ripped a two-RBI double to score Bieber and DeMarco. Spilman drew a walk to load the bases again before a walk by Brogan chased Wehr across the plate.

The Greyhounds scored two additional runs in the runs in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single from Spilman that scored Wehr and sophomore left fielder Emily Stanilious , who had singled in her first at-bat of the game.

Moravian added another seven hits in the second contest with DeMarco going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a homer and junior third baseman Madison Shaneberger posting a 2-for-3 game with a pair of RBIs.

Senior Amanda Carisone started in the circle and improved to 12-1 this spring after allowing two hits and striking out five batters in four innings. Freshman Meghan Bauer tossed the final inning with one strikeout.

Moravian opened the scoring in the second game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Spilman drove in the first run with an RBI single to plate DeMarco, who had singled earlier in the inning. Shaneberger connected on a two-RBI single to score Spilman and Matos, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Markovic finished with frame with an RBI single that chased Shaneberger across the plate.

The Hounds added a run in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 advantage. Stanilious reached on an error to lead off the frame and scored on an RBI single from DeMarco.

The Blue and Grey scored four times in the third inning when Bieber, Stanilious and Wehr walked before DeMarco connected on a grand slam to left field, her first homer of the season, for a 9-0 lead. 

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 21 in a non-conference doubleheader at the College of Staten Island beginning at 1:00 p.m.
