No. 19 Hounds Win Two More Games Versus Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. --- The No. 19 Moravian College softball team swept Gwynedd Mercy University for the second time in five days, winning 10-2 and 11-1 in five innings, Wednesday afternoon in the Greyhounds first road trip since heading to Florida for a spring trip to the National Training Center last March.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • The Griffins jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the opener
  • Moravian tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second when senior second baseman Shannon Brogan walked with two outs, stole second and scored on an RBI single by junior designated player Briana DiCandeloro
  • The Greyhounds broke the tie with a four-run fifth inning to move ahead 5-1. Junior center fielder Cameron Cassidy ripped a two-RBI triple, and she would come home on an RBI double by senior third baseman Maddisen Bieber. Bieber raced home on a wild pitch for the final run of the winning
  • Gwynedd Mercy tacked on a run in the bottom half of the fifth to make it a 5-2 game
  • The Hounds finished off the scoring with five runs in the top of the seventh frame. Senior catcher Brooke Wehr had a two-RBI triple before scoring on an error. DiCandeloro connected on an RBI single later in the inning before the Blue and Grey scored the final run of the game on an error
  • Junior Alexandria Scheeler tossed the first six innings in the circle with five strikeouts while senior Meghan Bauer pitched the final inning 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game on an RBI single from Bieber and a two-RBI single off of Brogan's bat
  • Moravian pushed the lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the top of the second when Bieber connected on a two-RBI single
  • The Blue and Grey added two runs in the top of the third for a 7-0 edge on an error and an RBI single by junior outfielder Victoria Smith
  • The Hounds extended the advantage to 9-0 with two runs in the fourth on an RBI double by Brogan and an RBI single from DiCandeloro
  • Gwynedd Mercy scored its run in the second game in the bottom half of the fourth inning
  • Moravian finished off the scoring with two runs in the top of the fifth for the NCAAs eight-run rule. Wehr connected on a two-run homer in the inning, her first homer of the year and 23rd of her career
  • Sophomore Madison Hummel made the start in the first and had one strikeout in three innings of action while Bauer tossed the final three innings with one strikeout 

First for the Hounds

  • Cassidy returned to the line-up for her first action since the end of the 2019 season as she missed the shortened 2020 campaign due to an injury 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian collected 23 hits between the two games with Bieber leading the way with a 4-for-7 day that included four runs, four RBIs and a double
  • Wehr was 3-for-6 on the afternoon with three runs, four RBIs, a triple and a homer while DiCandeloro went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs. Smith added a 3-for-4 day with two runs and an RBI while senior outfielder Maura Kane was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs
  • Brogan had two hits, three RBIs and a double while Cassidy added two hits, two runs, two RBIs and a triple
  • Through four games, the Greyhounds offense has now scored 47 runs and batted in just 20 innings
