Moravian Earns a Pair of Victories to Open 2022 Campaign in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. --- The Moravian University softball squad opened its 2022 season with a pair of non-conference games at the PFX Spring Games on Saturday, defeating Finlandia (Mich.) University 8-0 in six innings and then taking down Rosemont College 3-2 to conclude the day.

How It Happened – Finlandia (Mich.)

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber singled to left-center field that plated two runners
  • Moravian tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third frame with an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Emily Silberman to bring in senior catcher Brooke Wehr to extend the edge to 3-0. Senior right fielder Victoria Smith drove in a runner on a fielder's choice to put the Hounds up 4-0 after three innings
  • Wehr plated her lone RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to push the lead to 5-0
  • The Greyhounds scored the final three runs of the game in the sixth frame, with freshman pinch hitter Ren Herschman singling up the middle to score sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore for a 6-0 edge. Silberman walked in a run and the final run crossed the plate after Bieber was hit by a pitch for Moravian to end the 8-0 game in six innings
  • Junior pitcher Madison Hummel made the start in the circle and had nine strikeouts and allowed three hits and a walk in six innings of work.

How It Happened – Rosemont

  • After two scoreless innings, Moravian would finally get on the board with Silberman doubling to right-center field to drive in sophomore left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer for a 1-0 advantage
  • Zettlemoyer grounded out to second base that advanced the runners and brought home senior centerfielder Cameron Cassidy to take a 2-0 lead before Rosemont found a way to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning
  • In the top of the seventh frame, Wehr singled through the right side to bring in freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham which would be the game-winning run.
  • Cunningham made her collegiate debut in the circle and record 13 strikeouts, which is ninth-best game in program history and the most strikeouts delivered by a freshman. Cunningham allowed four hits and two earned runs in her first game wearing the Blue and Grey

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits on the afternoon with 11 in the first contest as the Greyhounds outhit their opponents, 16-7
  • Wehr went 4-for-7 on the day with two RBIs, two runs and a double while Bieber and freshman third basemen Holly Walter both went 2-for-5 in the doubleheader. Bieber plated three runs and Walter scored twice and hit a double.
  • Elmore went 2-for-6 with a run scored and Silberman had two doubles with three RBIs while Herschman recorded a hit in her only plate appearance with an RBI
  • Cunningham, Smith and Zettlemoyer each earned a hit on the first day of the season with Smith and Zettlemoyer also contributing RBIs
