BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team needed extra innings in the second game to complete a Landmark Conference sweep of visiting Elizabethtown College at Blue & Grey Field Saturday as the Greyhounds celebrated Senior Day and the 900th career win of Head Coach John Byrne.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the opener. Senior catcher Brooke Wehr led off with a single, and she eventually scored on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field from sophomore second baseman Ajala Elmore
  • Moravian stretched the edge to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning. Senior outfielder Victoria Smith connected on a one-out double and scored on an RBI single off the bat of senior outfielder Cameron Cassidy. Wehr then hit an RBI double to bring in Cassidy
  • The Blue Jays scored their two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game
  • Junior Madison Hummel earned the win in the circle to improve to 11-2 on the season, and she had one strikeout
  • Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored Cassidy, Smith, Wehr, Maddisen Bieber and Robin McCabe for their careers with the Moravian program, and for both Bieber and Wehr, it is five seasons as Greyhounds
  • The Hounds also honored Coach Byrne for his 900th career victory back on March 2. He is the fifth active and ninth overall NCAA Division III coach to reach the milestone, and Byrne currently has a record of 920-256

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning in the second game. Sophomore designated player Emily Silberman hit a single before Cassidy came in to run. Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham hit a single while freshman third baseman Holly Walter put down a bunt single to load the bases. Smith connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Cassidy, and Cunningham raced home on a throwing error on the play
  • Elizabethtown scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings, and two more runs in the top of the eighth for a 4-2 advantage
  • The Greyhounds plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Cunningham hit a one-out single and moved to third on a double to right field by Walter. Smith followed with an RBI single to bring in Cunningham while sophomore outfielder Mya Zettlemoyer had an RBI fielder's choice that saw Walter cross the plate. A wild pitch moved the winning run to third, and Smith scampered home with the winning run on a throwing error after Wehr hit a fly ball to left field
  • Cunningham won her 15th game of the season in the circle, and she had a pair of strikeouts in eight innings
