Spring Break Update - March 20, 2015

Hello Greyhound softball supporters!

We just kicked off our season in sunny Clermont, Florida with ten games as a part of the National Training Center Spring Games, and returned home with a solid 8-2 record.  While in Clermont, we played a challenging schedule under sunny skies and 80 degree weather.

You could tell that our 2015 squad was ready to make the most of every opportunity outside in Florida before  returning back home to a  very challenging  schedule.  A bright spot of our trip was our pitching, as we have only given up 22 runs and have a 0.49 ERA to date.  We showed good signs of battling through tough situations, both offensively and defensively.  We started off with two extra inning loses, before coming back with an 8 game winning streak to end the trip.

It was a good gauge to see where our team is early in the season.  Despite scoring a high volume of runs over our spring break, we look to improve on our offense and defense as we gear up for our Landmark Conference slate.  We have a long season ahead of us, opening up with conference play against  the University of Scranton on Saturday March 21, following with the always challenging College of New Jersey on Tuesday, March 24.

We are excited to continue our season and should improve upon our fast start heading into the spring!  We hope to see you at our games!  Go Hounds!

Best wishes,

Congratulations to the Seniors & Landmark Tournament Preview - April 28, 2014

Let me begin with quick congratulations to a very, very accomplished senior class of 2014.  We held a beautiful ceremony before our regular season finale on Saturday 4/26 vs. Juniata College.  We honored catcher Taylor Mihalik, infielder Rachel DeLucia, catcher Cassie Ernst, pitcher Liz Tillou, second baseman Eavan Matz, outfielder Melissa Cottone, infielder Leann Ventriglia, and outfielder Miranda Sergas.  Although they are incredibly talented softball players, I doubt you’d find too many better people than the ones in this bunch.  They will undoubtedly be successful after their Moravian days, and will be greatly missed.

But for now, we feel we have a lot more softball to play!  To highlight some big wins over the past few weeks, we swept rival Muhlenberg College 5-1 and 2-1 to clinch the Matte Award for Moravian College, our first since 2004. We’ve also played some extra inning games in there and have earned some quality wins.  With a 9-inning win atElizabethtown College to ultimately earn a sweep and to win 10-inning thriller vs Catholic University in order to salvage a split, we’ve finished 9-3 in our conference and locked up a 2-seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament.

We’ll be heading to Selinsgrove, PA, where the tournament will be held and will open up the tournament with a 1 PMgame on Friday, May 2 at 1 PM vs Catholic University.  We have a tall task ahead of us, as every team in the Landmark tournament is a quality opponent.  Our squad will be up to the challenge and we can’t wait to battle to reclaim the Championship!

Thanks for your support!  Go Hounds!!

Reaching the Midway Point - April 7, 2014

Hello Greyhound softball supporters!

Heading into the last month of our season, we have a full slate of games still ahead of us.  It’s been difficult to get games in due to the inclement weather.  This past week we were able to get out and play in some better weather though, and once we got back on the field, we were clicking. Aside from our offense, our pitching and defense really picked up the intensity this week and did what they had to do.

All facets of our game were working this week, as we ripped off six straight wins en route to a perfect 6-0 record.  We started our week with two wins at Centenary College by scores of 17-2 and 11-0.  That game prepared us well for conference opponent Drew University, as our offense picked up right where they left off on Tuesday.  We take none of our games lightly, and it showed.  We scored early and often, picking up two Landmark Conference wins to even our record there at 2-2.  We closed out our week with two wins over Hunter College in the same fashion as the first four of the week.

This upcoming week we are on the road for six games.  We head to Delaware Valley College, followed by a Matte Award doubleheader with Muhlenberg College.  We’ll be returning to Landmark Conference action with a doubleheader at the challenging Elizabethtown College.  We will need all three phases of the game to be sharp again this week, as each team presents a different challenge for us.

As always, we look forward to the opportunity to play these difficult opponents and to pick up some momentum heading into the final weeks of the season.  We hope for your support!

Best Wishes,
Coach Byrne

Recapping Spring Break - March 10, 2014

Hello Greyhound softball supporters!

We just kicked off our season in sunny Clermont, Florida with six games as a part of the National Training Center Spring Games, and returned home with a solid 5-1 record.  In Clermont, we played good teams under mostly sunny skies and 80 degree weather.

You could tell that our 2014 squad was ready to make the most of every opportunity outside before we continue into our very challenging schedule.  Our offense jumped out to a fast start, backing up our strong starting pitching with 60 well-deserved runs in six games.  Pitching and defense also helped us win games, as we’ve only given up 9 runs to date.  We showed good signs of battling through tough situations, both offensively and defensively.  We started off with five straight wins, before dropping a tough game 3-2 to Case Western Reserve University, who is always a national contender.

It was a good gauge to see where our team is early in the season.  And despite losing two games to rain on Thursday, March 6, we look to pick up two more in order to complete our 40-game schedule.  Despite scoring a high volume of runs over our spring break, we look to improve on our offense as we gear up for our Landmark conference slate.  We have a long season ahead of us yet, starting with the always challenging College of New Jersey on Tuesday, March 18 before opening up conference play at Susquehanna University on Saturday, March 22.

We are excited to continue our season back home and should improve upon our fast start heading into the spring!  We hope to see you at our games!  Go Hounds!

Best wishes,
Coach Byrne
