Greyhounds Roll Over USMMA, 64-49

The Moravian College women's basketball team defeated Landmark Conference opponent The United States Merchant Marine Academy 64-49. Senior forward Alexandra Blair recorded her 12th career double-double off of 17 rebounds and 12 points to go with her five blocks.

Off of a missed layup by the Mariners, Alexandra Blair would bring down the rebound. That rebound was number 574 for her career, which moved her into sole possession of tenth place for all-time career rebounds. Senior guard Hilary Murray got the Greyhounds on the board first with a layup a minute

Murray would line up the three-point shot at the 13 minute mark to give Moravian a 7-4 lead. After a bucket from USMMA, Murray would start a fast break that sophomore guard Katie O'Rourke would finish with an easy layup for a 9-6 lead with 11:29 remaining in the half. After another layup from O'Rourke, sophomore guard Danielle Brogan nailed a three from the corner as the Hounds went up 14-6 with 10:21 left in the first half.

Freshman forward Rebecca Resor would hit a layup while drawing the foul with 7:21 to go in the half. She would convert the free throw for the three-point play to make the score 16-10, Moravian. Freshman forward Alexis Wright answered right back with a layup to go up 18-10.

Murray and Brogan would extend the Greyhounds lead to 13 points at 23-10 with 5:36 to go in the first. Junior guard Tamara Kaileh would cut the Mariners deficit to ten points with 2:37 left in the half. With a deep two-pointer from junior guard Amanda Kreuder, the Greyhounds would push its lead to 14 points with just under two minutes to go. Moravian would end up taking a 29-15 lead into the locker room.

The Greyhounds shot 32-percent from the field while the Mariners shot 15-percent from the field in the first half. Moravian held a 31-29 rebounding advantage, and the Greyhounds had four less turnovers. O'Rourke led Moravian in the first half with six points and four rebounds while Resor led USMMA with four points and five boards.

Murray would go coast-to-coast for an easy layup to start the second half. Junior guard Roshenda Josephs would answer with bucket of her own to make the score 31-17 two minutes into the half. Alexandra Blair would make the jumper of the glass to put the Greyhounds up 16 with 15:43 left in the contest.

Sophomore forward Erika Blair would go up strong for the lay in to give Moravian a 43-28 lead with just over 13 minutes to go. After a layup from Kreuder and two free throws from O'Rourke on the next possession the Greyhounds would push their lead to 18 at 50-32 with nine minutes left in the contest. Sophomore guard Laura Casey sliced to the basket for the layup to give Moravian a 58-36 lead with 5:43 remaining in the contest. The Greyhounds would go onto win 64-49

Murray had 11 points and three assists while O'Rourke had eight points and six rebounds. Wright tallied six points and four boards while Erika Blair had six points, six rebounds and two steals. Casey had six points and Brogan had five points and four rebounds.

The Mariners were led by Kaileh with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Demi VanDerWal had nine points and seven boards while Josephs had seven points, seven rebounds and five steals.

Moravian shot 36-percent from the field while USMMA shot 29-percent from the field for the game. The Greyhounds out rebounded the Mariners 57-51 and had three less turnovers.

Moravian will host conference rival Drew University tomorrow, January 14th at 4 p.m. in Johnston Hall. The Greyhounds are hosting Take a Kid to the Game tomorrow afternoon.
