BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College Head Women's Basketball Coach Mary Beth Spirk, along with Assistant Coach Amy Endler '93, sophomore guard Morgan Calabrese '17 and Phillipsburg High School Girls Basketball Coach Nicole Savino '06 participated in the #Chillin4Charity cold water challenge in front of Timothy Breidegam Fieldhouse Thursday.

#Chillin4Charity was started by University of Arizona Head Coach Niya Butts to combine viral videos and raising money for charity, in this case, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Read more about Coach Butts at http://kayyow.com/2014/06/20/the-cold-water-challenge-anything-but-cold/#more-1320.

The challenge is as follows – once a coach is called out, he/she has 48 hours to respond to the challenge. If they agree, the person who challenged them will make a donation to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. If a coach doesn't accept the challenge, then it is that coach's responsibility to make a larger donation to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Once the challenge is accepted, the coach will announce who they challenge and then be showered with a cooler full of ice water to finish.

"It was good and for a good cause," Spirk stated. "I think I was more nervous beforehand but it was good fun in the end."

Coach Spirk was challenged by fellow Landmark Conference coach Didi Cotton from Goucher College, who took the challenge on Tuesday. Coach Spirk was ready to accept the challenge, especially with the Greyhounds having led Play 4Kay at the NCAA Division III level over the last six years with $57,933 donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Spirk first challenged Endler, Savino and Assistant Coach Sara Steinman. Steinman is currently working a camp in Springfield, New Jersey and will complete the challenge at camp on Friday.

"I expected that it would eventually make its way to Division III so it was kind of fun to be challenged by Didi," explained Spirk. "We're pretty good buddies so of course I wasn't not going to accept the challenge. It was fun."

Spirk also challenged her fellow NCAA Division III representatives on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors Christy Thomaskutty of Emory University and Patricia Manning at Williams College. Spirk also issued challenges to close friends Janice Luck, the head coach at Albright College, and Fred Richter, the head coach at DeSales University.

Calabrese issued a challenge to teammate, junior guard Emily MacDonnell, who is working the camp with Steinman and will also fulfill the challenge on Friday.

Endler challenged Matt Dempsey and Alexa Shields, the head coach and assistant coach at Landmark foe the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and Susquehanna University assistant coach Taylor Greene.

Savino issued a challenge to Liberty High School girls coach Becky Soto and former teammate Stephanie Seaman Kennedy '06, the head coach at Northeast Middle School.
