Women's Basketball Tripped Up by No. 13 Scranton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Junior guard Emily MacDonnell connected on a trio of three-pointers and netted 11 points overall; however, the Moravian College women's basketball team dropped an 82-57 Landmark Conference game to No. 13 The University of Scranton in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.

Junior forward Alesha Marcks led the Greyhounds with 13 points while freshman forward Trista Cunningham added nine points and three rebounds. Senior forward Alexis Wright grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to move into third place in school history with 820 boards, and she added eight points and a pair of blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Morgan Calabrese also had eight points to go along with four rebounds for the Hounds while MacDonnell dished out a team-high three assists and had a pair of steals in the contest. Freshman forward Jen Cella tossed in four points for Moravian.

The Greyhounds took a 3-2 lead on their first possession of the game when MacDonnell drilled her first three-pointer, and Moravian would push that lead to 9-4 with 17:48 on the clock after a lay-up from Marcks. The Royals answered with an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead, an advantage they would hold the rest of the contest.

Scranton would push its lead into double digits at 36-23 but the Hounds scored eight of the final 10 points of the half to head to the locker room down 38-31. The Royals came out of the locker room with a 6-0 run to push the lead back into double digits.

"I thought we played hard enough in the first half, cutting the deficit to seven and getting in pretty good position," commented Head Coach Mary Beth Spirk. "It was disappointing how we came out the second half. We allowed Scranton to do whatever they wanted to after that.

"We have to put it behind us and move on and say we have to get Juniata on Saturday," Spirk continued. "That is how we have to look at it, learn a little and move on."

Moravian is slated to return to action on Saturday, January 24 when they host Juniata College in a Landmark Conference game tipping off at 2:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall.
