ANNVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team used an all-around team effort to post a 67-38 victory over Eastern University in the opening round of the Rinso Marquette Tournament Saturday evening at Lebanon Valley College.
The Greyhounds, who are 1-1 on the season after earning their first victory of the year, will face the host Flying Dutchmen in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday, November 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Sorrentino Gymnasium in Annville.
Sophomore guard Maddie Capuano led the Hounds with 13 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals while sophomore forward Nadine Ewald tossed in 10 points to go with seven boards. Sophomore guard Karlie Brogan added nine points, eight rebounds and two steals while senior forward Trista Cunningham, senior forward Ciara Stewart and graduate student forward Camille McPherson all had six points with Cunningham grabbing 10 rebounds, Stewart adding three boards and McPherson contributing two assists and a pair of blocked shots.
Senior guard Taylor Freeman and junior forward Ariana Caiati both tossed in four points with Caiati adding two rebounds while sophomore forward Christine Neu contributed three points. Senior forward Jen Cella, sophomore guard Brooke Santy and freshman guard Jennifer McClave each scored two points with Cella grabbing three rebounds. Freshman guard Julia Sirotnak also had three rebounds while junior guard Emily Walls had two boards.
Ewald opened the scoring with back-to-back lay-ups to give the Blue and Grey a 4-0 lead. The Eagles tied the contest at 4-4 before a 9-0 run by the Greyhounds capped by a three-pointer by Brogan had Moravian ahead 13-4 with 4:19 left in the opening quarter. The Hounds' biggest lead of the opening ten minutes was 12 points, 17-5, after a jumper by McClave with 2:08 on the clock, and Moravian led 19-12 after the first period.
The Greyhounds held the lead through the entire second quarter with Brogan pushing the advantage to 16 points at 28-12 with 7:40 before the intermission. Eastern would close back within eight points before a lay-up by Ewald late in the period sent Moravian to the locker room with a 10-point advantage, 34-24.
The Hounds outscored the Eagles 15-10 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 49-34 after 30 minutes of action, and the Greyhounds had an 18-4 edge in points over the final ten minutes of play.
