Hounds Take Down Host Lebanon Valley to Claim Rinso Marquette Tournament Title

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's basketball squad, which is now 2-1 on the season after earning their first victory of the year last night versus Eastern, posted a 69-63 victory over Lebanon Valley College in the Championship game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament Sunday afternoon at Sorrentino Gymnasium in Annville.

Graduate student forward Camille McPherson, who was selected to the All-Tournament team, led the Hounds with a season high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds, one assist and a blocked shot while sophomore forward Nadine Ewald tossed in 13 points to go with 12 boards for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Maddie Capuano also ended the afternoon in double figures with 11 points, adding three steals while sophomore guard Karlie Brogan and Tournament Most Valuable Player, senior forward Trista Cunningham ended with six points each. Brogan contributed six rebounds and three assists and Cunningham adding eight rebounds and five steals.

Senior forward Ciara Stewart scored four points for the Blue and Grey while collecting four rebounds and a block, and freshman guard Jennifer McClave scored two points the final game of the tournament with two steals and an assist. Junior forward Ariana Caiati recorded a point from the free throw line and one rebound. Senior forward Jen Cella added one rebound and a block while sophomore guard Brooke Santy dished out an assist and freshman guard Julia Sirotnak had two rebounds.

The Flying Dutchman would get on the board first with two free throws, but McPherson converted a lay-up and two free throws for the 4-2 lead, and the Hounds would hold the lead for the rest of the contest. Moravian would go on a 17-0 run to end the first quarter. McPherson and Capuano would sink three-pointers to push the lead to 10-2, then Capuano made a free throw and Brogan would sink a three-point shot to extend the lead to 14-2 with 5:17 to play in the opening quarter. Stewart would make a lay-up, followed by a jump shot and three-point basket to end the scoring for the quarter at 21-2.

The Greyhounds held the lead through the entire second quarter with Brogan pushing the advantage to 24 points at 31-7 with 6:43 before the intermission. Lebanon Valley would close back within 11 points before back-to-back lay-ups by Ewald late in the period that sent Moravian to the locker room with a 15-point advantage, 40-25.

The Flying Dutchmen outscored Moravian 15-14 in the third quarter, yet the Hounds were still leading 54-40 after 30 minutes of action. During the final quarter, the Greyhounds would allow Lebanon Valley to score 23 points, but the Blue and Grey would remain in the lead as they took down the Flying Dutchmen 69-63.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, November 21 in a non-conference game at DeSales University. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. and the contest will be the second of the season for Moravian that will be broadcast live by TV-2 Sports.
