Quick Start Leads Greyhounds to Win at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian College women's basketball team jumped out to a 25-7 lead in the first quarter and went on to earn an 81-38 victory at Goucher College in Landmark Conference action Thursday evening.

The Hounds, who are now 15-7 overall and 5-6 in Landmark Conference play, used a balanced scoring attack and even minutes with 17 players seeing at leasr seven minutes on the court and no one over 17 minutes. Graduate student forward Camille McPherson and sophomore forward Nadine Ewald each scored a team-high 12 points with Ewald grabbing six rebounds and McPherson contributing five boards and a pair of assists. Sophomore guard Karlie Brogan added 11 points and four rebounds.

Senior guard Taylor Freeman had nine points and a pair of assists for the Blue and Grey while senior forward Ciara Stewart added seven points and five boards. Senior forward Trista Cunningham and freshman guard Sarah Donati each scored six points while junior forward Ariana Caiati had five points and two rebounds. Freshman guard Julia Sirotnak added three points and six rebounds for the Hounds. Senior forward Jen Cella had three rebounds, three assists and two points in the victory while freshman forward Jordan Beneducci contributed two points and two boards. Sophomore guard Maddie Capuano had six assists and two points while sophomore forward Christine Neu added two points and two assists. Junior guard Emily Walls netted two points while junior guard Tyis Mullen had a pair of rebounds.

The Hounds connected on 34-of-61 field goal attempts, 4-of-12 three-pointers and 9-of-16 free throw shots in the game, and the Blue and Grey posted a 40-36 edge on the boards while forcing Goucher into 18 turnovers.

Ewald and Brogan each scored in the first 30 seconds of the contest to start an 11-0 run and put Moravian ahead for good. Cunningham capped the run with a lay-up at 6:59, and a three-pointer by Freeman had the Hounds leading 25-7 after 10 minutes of action. McPherson pushed the lead to 20 points, 37-17, with just over three minutes left in the second quarter and the Greyhounds headed to the locker room with a 44-19 advantage.

The lead would reach 30 points, 49-19, on two free throws by Brogan early in the third quarter, and a lay-up by Stewart had Moravian up 66-25 after 30 minutes of play.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, February 10 when Moravian hosts Juniata College in its final home game of the 2017-18 season. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall with the Hounds hosting Senior Day prior to tip-off as well as Moravian's National Girls and Women in Sports Day event with free admission and t-shirts for all girls 14 and under attending the game.
