Yoegel's Career-High 33 Points Lifts Moravian Past Susquehanna in Johnston Hall

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball team earned a 74-63 Landmark Conference win over visiting Susquehanna University in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening as senior forward Kayla Yoegel netted a career-high 33 points for the Hounds.

How It Happened

  • The River Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Yoegel connected on a three-pointer to get the Blue and Grey on the scoreboard, and Moravian eventually tied the contest at 8-8 on a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Sam Osorio at the 7:25 mark. The Greyhounds took their first lead of the night with 3:38 remaining in the first quarter when junior guard Madison Amy sank two free throws for a 14-13 advantage. Osorio pushed the lead to 18-15 with less than 30 seconds left in the quarter, but Susquehanna beat the buzzer with a jumper to cut the Hounds' edge to 18-17 after 10 minutes of action
  • Yoegel and Osorio connected on lay-ups to begin the second quarter as Moravian increased the advantage to five points at 22-17; however, the River Hawks scored the next six points to move back in front 23-22. Sophomore forward Gracie Hezel hit a lay-up as the Greyhounds took a 26-25 edge. Five points from Susquehanna had the River Hawks ahead 30-26, and Susquehanna headed to the locker room with a 34-31 lead
  • Junior forward Emily Markowski hit a lay-up to start scoring in the second half, and Moravian knotted the game for the fourth time at 36-36 on a three-pointer from Amy. Yoegel put the Greyhounds ahead once again at 38-36 on a jumper at the 7:18 mark, and two free throws from Yoegel had the Blue and Grey up 45-40 with 3:50 left in the quarter. The River Hawks answered with a 6-0 run to retake the lead, but Amy hit a jumper with 1:04 as Moravian led 47-46 after 30 minutes of action
  • Yoegel opened the scoring in the fourth, but the River Hawks hit a three-pointer to knot the contest at 51-51. The game would be tied again at 54-54 before junior guard Jackie Kelly gave the Hounds the lead for good with a lay-up at the 6:05 mark. Susquehanna cut it back to a one-point affair at 62-61 on a three-pointer with 3:06 to go. Moravian netted the next six points with a trifecta from Kelly pushing the advantage to 68-61 with 1:39 showing on the clock. After a basket by the River Hawks, the Greyhounds netted the final six points with Amy sealing the victory with four free throws in the final 11.5 seconds

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had two players in double figures with Yoegel's game-high 33 points leading the way. It was her first career 30-point game and came on 13-for-21 shooting from the floor, 3-for-5 on three-pointers and 4-for-5 at the foul line, and Yoegel also had eight rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of assists
  • Amy tossed in 15 points while adding four rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots while Osorio contributed nine points, seven rebounds and three steals
  • Kelly finished with seven points and a career-high seven rebounds while junior guard Morgan Amy added six assists, four points, three rebounds and a trio of steals
  • Hezel, Markowski and freshman forward Brielle Guarente all scored two points with Hezel adding five rebounds and Guarente grabbing two boards
  • The two key stat lines were the foul line where the Greyhounds went 17-for-19 (89.5 percent and a season best) while the River Hawks were 9-for-12, and on the boards where Moravian held a 41-24 edge including 16-9 in offensive rebounds. The Blue and Grey won their third straight game when they outrebounded an opponent and are 3-2 overall this winter when grabbing more boards in a contest
  • The Hounds netted 27 points in the fourth quarter, the second straight game that Moravian has scored 27 points in the final 10 minutes of regulation
