Big Second Quarter Lifts Hounds Past Goucher

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad outscored visiting Goucher College, 27-9, in the second quarter to turn a two-point game into a runaway as the Greyhounds defeated the Gophers, 77-50, in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

  • The Hounds netted the first eight points of the contest with six from graduate student forward Tessa Zamolyi and a jumper by junior forward Sam Osorio in the first five minutes of action. Goucher responded and cut the score to 10-8 with just 1:21 to go in the opening period. A late bucket from the Gophers had the Blue and Grey up just 12-10 after 10 minutes of action
  • Moravian tossed in the first four points of the second quarter with a pair of baskets from Osorio and a jumper by sophomore forward Brielle Guarente. Goucher closed the gap to six points twice, the second time at 20-14, before the Hounds went on an 11-1 run to make it 31-15 after a lay-up by senior guard Ashley Robinson with 3:54 until the intermission. The Greyhounds added eight more points while allowing four as the squad headed to the locker room with a 39-19 advantage
  • Graduate student forward Kayla Yoegel hit a jumper to start the second half, and Moravian had a 45-21 edge after a lay-up from Osorio at the 7:10 mark. Goucher closed the gap slightly before the end of the quarter as the Blue and Grey had a 54-38 edge after 30 minutes of play
  • The Hounds quickly pushed the lead back over 20 points on a three-pointer and a three-point play from Yoegel to start the fourth, and Moravian has the edge over 20 for the remainder of the game except for a brief 20 second span

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures led by Zamolyi, who had her tenth double-double of the season with 18 points and 15 rebounds to go with four assists, and Orsorio, who also tossed in 18 points to go along with nine rebounds
  • Robinson finished with 14 points, three boards and a pair of assists while Yoegel has 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals
  • Guarente recorded nine points, three rebounds and a pair of assists while senior forward Emily Markowski and freshman guard Jayda Cartagena each had four rebounds, two points and two assists with Markowski also grabbing a pair of steals
  • Senior guard Morgan Amy dished out eight assists to go with two rebounds and two steals while sophomore guard Mikayla Anderson scored two points
  • The Greyhounds shot 30-for-70 from the field, 1-for-4 on three-pointers and 16-for 22 at the foul line
  • The Blue & Grey also had a 47-43 edge on the boards in a contest that featured 40 offensive rebounds, 20 for each squad, and Moravian has just 11 turnovers while forcing the Gophers into 21 turnovers
