Third Seeded Greyhounds Fall at Scranton in Landmark Conference Semifinals

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The third seeded Moravian College women's lacrosse team had its 2018 season come to a close as the Greyhounds dropped a 17-10 decision at second seed The University of Scranton in the Landmark Conference Semifinals Wednesday evening.

The Hounds, who were making the program's first-ever appearance in the Landmark Conference Tournament, complete the year with an 11-5 overall record, the most wins in a season by the Blue and Grey in school history.

Sophomore midfielder Liz Bill led Moravian with three goals to finish the season with a school-record 73 goals on the year while freshman midfielder Meaghan McMullan had two goals and an assist. Freshman attack Danielle Sullivan and freshman midfielder Olivia Clearie each netted two goals while junior attack Jillian Picciuto had one goal to go with 10 draw controls and three ground balls.

Junior Kelley Gavin made six saves in 42 minutes of action while senior Elisabeth Pontius had two stops in the final 18 minutes of play. Sophomore midfielder Allie Fisher had a team-high five ground balls for Moravian to go with four draw controls while senior midfielder Alexis Kersten had three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Clearie also had two caused turnovers to go with two draw controls while McMullan had a pair of draw controls to finish the spring with a school record 95 draw controls.

The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by McMullan just 36 seconds into the match, and tallies by Bill and Sullivan had Moravian up 3-0 in the first 1:42 of action. Scranton scored before Sullivan's second goal made it 4-1 Hounds with 26:24 left in the first half. The Royals answered with nine straight goals to take a 10-4 edge. McMullan found the back of the net again with 4:31 before the intermission but Scranton would score twice more to lead 12-5 at halftime.

The Royals scored twice to start the second half before Bill netted her second goal of the evening. Scranton extended the advantage to 17-6 before Moravian scored three straight times with Clearie, Bill and Picciuto finding the net to cut the deficit to 17-9 with 9:24 remaining. Clearie added another goal with 4:38 remaining but that would be the last time either team scored.
