Women's Soccer Falls in Hard-Fought Match with Haverford

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought, 2-0 non-conference decision to Haverford College on the HUB Quad Wednesday afternoon.

The Greyhounds, now 6-4 on the season, put their first shot of the match on goal as senior midfielder/forward Kirsten Schall drilled a shot onto the Haverford keeper in the 14th minute; however, that would be the Hounds only shot of the first 45 minutes. It was the Fords that would get onto the scoreboard in the 27th minute for the lead.

Moravian came out strong after the intermission with junior midfielder Taylor Blake chipping a shot high in the 50th minute. In the 53rd minute, Schall would break in all alone and the Haverford keeper came rushing out to the top of the 18-yard box to block Schall's shot attempt. The ball bounced back towards midfield where sophomore defender Christine Miklas chipped the ball back in trying to drop it over the goalies head but Miklas shot was a little long and landed on the top of the net, just missing the crossbar.

Haverford answered the Greyhounds' pressure with three shots on goal, all stopped by Hounds' junior goalie Jacqueline Zalis. Zalis finished the contest with eight saves.

The Fords would get a second goal in the 73rd minute to finish off the scoring.

The Hounds would press until the end with a shot from Miklas in the 85th minute, one from sophomore defender Emeley Reyes in the 89th minute and one by sophomore forward Melissa Walko with just 11 seconds to play that was blocked on its way to the goal.

"I thought we played well, and there were opportunities that we had that we just didn't connect on," stated Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk. "I think as you watch the game those opportunities were there, and we just missed and weren't able to get it done in the final third of the field today. The ideas were there but the execution just wasn't today."

Moravian will return to action on Saturday, October 4 when the Greyhounds host The Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference match starting at 3:30 p.m. on the HUB Quad.
