Margiottiello Scores Twice as Greyhounds Top Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Senior forward Valentina Margiottiello scored a pair of goals, and she assisted on another as the Moravian College women's soccer team posted a 3-1 non-conference win over Penn State-Harrisburg at John Makuvek Field Wednesday evening.

"I was pleased that on a day that we didn't click as a team we found a way to control the game and get the result," stated Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk. "We played 21 players today and allowed our starters to get some rest for the weekend. When you rotate that many players in a game, the tempo and flow can get disrupted. We need to be better at putting away opportunities early in a game."

The Greyhounds, now 1-1 on the season, would strike first in the 10th minute when Margiottiello converted on a penalty kick for her first goal of the fall. It was also the first penalty kick of her career.

The Hounds extended the lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when junior forward Abby Guman scored her first career goal with the Blue and Grey as she rifled in a crossing pass from Margiottiello from eight yards out. Moravian pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the 55th minute when Margiottiello netted her second goal of the match and the seventh of her career as she put home a crossing pass from sophomore forward Gabby Stelzmiller.

"Valentina was the best player on the field all night," commented Ykoruk. "Her energy level and movement off the ball help create a bunch of opportunities for us and we hope to see more of that as the season continues."

The Lions would get on the scoreboard in the 64th minute on a direct kick that went just inside the far post. Moravian finished with a 14-4 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior goalie Jessica Lawton played the first 45 minutes of the contest for the Greyhounds while freshman Jamie Daly made her collegiate debut with two saves in the second half of the contest.

Moravian is scheduled to return action on Saturday, September 10 when the squad takes on Stockton University in the first day of the Drew University Fall Festival with the contest slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
