Lawton & Stelzmiller Named ECAC Division III Metro Athletes of the Week

DANBURY, Conn. --- Moravian College sophomore forward Gabby Stelzmiller has been named the ECAC Division III Metro Corvias Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week while junior goalie Jessica Lawton has been selected as the ECAC Division III Metro Corvias Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week for their performances over the last seven days.

Stelzmiller and Lawton helped lead the Greyhounds to a 2-0 record in Landmark Conference matches last week as the Hounds captured the second seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament with a 5-2 conference mark this fall.

Stelzmiller, who was also the Landmark Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week on Monday, netted two goals in Moravian's 2-0 win over Susquehanna University this past Saturday in the regular season finale. She scored on a penalty kick in the 80th minute for the first goal of the match, and Stelzmiller added her team-leading eighth tally of the year in the 89th minute to finish off the contest.

"Gabby has been working hard all season, and it is nice to see her rewarded for her efforts," stated Head Coach Jeff Ykoruk. "She has created a lot of opportunities for us in the attack and has been one of the most explosive players in the region."

Lawton, who earned ECAC Division III Metro Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season to go with three Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week honors, had a pair of shutouts in the final week of the regular season, and she posted six saves in 184:32 minutes of action. She recorded two saves in a 1-0 overtime win at Goucher College last Wednesday that clinched a postseason berth, and Lawton added four saves in the victory over Susquehanna to earn the home semifinal match. Lawton has not allowed a goal in her past three conference contests.

"Jess's leadership in the back has been key for us all season, and she had another great week with two more shutouts," Ykoruk said. "She has been good at coming off of her line to challenge shots and keep the ball out of the net."

Moravian, which is 9-6-1 overall, is scheduled to host third seed The Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference Semifinal match on Tuesday, November 1 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at John Makuvek Field in Bethlehem. It is the first home conference playoff contest for the Greyhounds since the program won the Landmark title in 2008.
