Hounds Close Landmark Slate with Sweep of Crusaders

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team closed out its 2014 Landmark Conference schedule with a 9-0 sweep of visiting Susquehanna University Saturday at Hoffman Courts as the Greyhounds clinched a home match in the 2014 Landmark Conference Semifinals on April 22.

The Hounds, now 14-3 overall and 5-1 in Landmark action, also celebrated Senior Day on Saturday as well as hosting a group of alumni, who came to honor Head Coach Dawn Ketterman-Benner, who has announced her retirement from Moravian at the end of the season after 43 years at the school.

"It was a great day to be a Hound," Ketterman-Benner said. "We had lots of love there on Senior Day and from the alumni that came out this afternoon.

Moravian started the sweep by capturing all three doubles matches. Seniors Melissa Follett and Erica Venuti had an 8-4 victory at first doubles, and senior Katie Zien and freshman Brittney Eady won by the same score at second doubles. Freshmen Julia Atiyeh and Selina Ocasio had an 8-3 triumph at third doubles.

The Hounds then went onto win five of the six singles contests in straight sets with Follett winning 6-3, 6-1 at first singles, Eady with a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles, Zien posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory at third singles, Venuti capturing fourth singles by a 6-2, 6-0 score and sophomore Courtnie Lambert won 6-2, 6-4 at sixth singles. Ocasio needed three sets for her win at fifth singles, eventually capturing the match, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) as she played a 10-point tiebreaker for a third set with the overall match score already determined at that point.

"It was a great win for us today," Venuti, one of the team's co-captains stated. "Winning 9-0 was the perfect way to end the conference season."

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to Hoffman Courts on Tuesday, April 15 for their final home non-conference match of the season when Arcadia University comes to town for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
