BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's tennis team posted a hard-fought, 5-4 victory over visiting The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action at Hoffman Courts Thursday.
"The team won a hard fought match today," stated Head Coach Alan Heverly. "Everyone played hard and it showed. Teams one through five in the conference are close, so I am proud of our players coming through when the competition is so close."
The Greyhounds, who are now 9-6 overall and 4-2 in Landmark Conference action, won two of the three doubles matches to build a 2-1 lead. Senior Brittney Eady and junior Skylar Oliwa were the first off of the court with an 8-0 victory at first doubles while freshmen Eiman Nazif and Lauren Steinert pushed the advantage to 2-0 with an 8-5 victory at second doubles. The doubles win for Eady was the 46th of her career to move her into a tie for fourth in school history. The Royals would pick up an 8-6 win at third doubles to cut the Hounds' lead to 2-1.
Eady finished first in singles action as well as her 6-3, 6-0 victory at first singles gave Moravian a 3-1 lead, and the won was the 50th of Eady's career as she became the ninth player in school history to hit the milestone.
"Brittney plays with a combination of talent and maturity," Heverly said. "Along with that she works hard at improving her skills. I could not ask for a better captain or number one player."
Scranton picked up a straight sets win at fifth singles before Nazif earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at third singles for a 4-2 advantage. The Royals earned the next team point with a triumph at second singles before freshman Emily Snyder won in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 at sixth singles to clinch the victory for the Greyhounds. The final match at fourth singles would go to a tiebreaker in the third set with Scranton earning the final team point of the match.
Moravian will close out its 2017 Landmark Conference and regular season with a match versus The Catholic University of America on Saturday, April 27 at Hoffman Courts beginning at 1:00 p.m. If the Greyhounds win on Saturday, they will clinch the third seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament.
