BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College is continuing its look back at its 2016-17 athletic campaign. The next event in the top 10 exciting games from the past year with a look at our No. 9 highlight – the women's tennis team defeating rival Muhlenberg College, 5-4, in the final singles match.
The Greyhounds, who finished the year at 10-7 overall and 5-2 in Landmark Conference action, would eventually reach the Landmark Conference Semifinals in part because the squad was 6-2 in the month of April.
On the afternoon of April 13, the Hounds welcomed rival Muhlenberg to Hoffman Courts on the Steel Athletic Complex. For Moravian, it was the squad's first home match of the spring and first at Hoffman Courts since the home opener in September 2016. The Blue and Grey finished the year with a 5-0 mark on Hoffman Courts including three 5-4 victories.
The Mules would win the first match to finish at second doubles but tandem of sophomore Kate Rennar and freshman Emily Snyder answered quickly with an 8-5 triumph at third doubles to tie the contest. The Greyhounds moved ahead, 2-1, a few minutes later when freshmen Eiman Nazif and Lauren Steinert earned an 8-5 victory at first doubles, their first match of the year at the top spot in the lineup due to an injury to senior Brittney Eady.
With Eady on the sidelines, Moravian was forced to move each person in the line-up up one spot. Nazif finished her second singles match first due to an injury that gave the Greyhounds a 3-1 lead. However, Muhlenberg won the next two contests to knot the score at 3-3. Snyder jumped into the line-up at sixth singles due to Eady's injury and posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory to put the Hounds back in front, 4-3, however; the Mules won at fourth singles to tie the score again at 4-4.
The only singles contest of the afternoon that didn't end in straight sets was at fifth singles between junior Grace Bailly and Muhlenberg's Hannah Bobker. Bailly won the opening set by a 6-1 score while Bobker captured the second set, 6-4, to force the third set. Bailly went on to win all six games in the third set for the 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory giving the Hounds the 5-4 win over the Mules.
