2014 Blue & Grey Intrasquad
Meet - November 12, 2014
It’s a great day to be a Hound! On Saturday, the
track and field teams held their annual Blue and Grey intrasquad
meet and athletes left with a sense of pride and excitement for the
up-and-coming season. The day consisted of nine events, the
standing long jump and triple jump, shot put and weight throw, 40
meter dash, 320 meter race, the three hurdle race, the handstand
walk, and the 4x160m relay.
The pole vaulters started with an impressive handstand walk that
displayed their upper body strength, balance, and poise.
The jumpers leapt to success in both the long jump and the
triple jump. Stand out marks included Melissa Cheong in the
standing long jump with a mark of 8’4” and Gavin Bailey
with a mark of 9’10”. Kiara Bright skipped to victory
in the women’s standing triple jump with a mark of
29’7”. The men’s triple jump was much closer and
only two inches separated Kahron Walker and Chris Ossont who were
both in the 39 foot range.
Gavin Bailey came back to win the hurdles for the men. Morgan
Redmond also had an impressive win in the three hurdle race for the
women. She improved by 0.2 second from last year but came up just
short in the 40 meter dash. Her teammate, Briana Wright, crossed
the finish line first for the women while Matt Barnett sprinted to
victory on the men’s side.
The two lap race, a fan favorite, was a fight to the finish for
both the men’s and women’s race. Corinne Glass and
Brielle Sutter battled for the win. The race was close but 400
meter record holder, Brielle Sutter, was today’s winner by
about a half second. On the men’s side, Tyler Dwyer led
the pack. Although his teammates were close behind him, he
stood his ground and crossed the line first.
The coed relay gave the Greyhounds a chance to mix things up,
work as a team, and created a strong sense of pride amongst each
other. There was no A team, no B team, no women’s team, no
men’s team, there were only teams of Greyhounds racing around
the track.
The throwers had a great day as well. After only a few weeks of
practice, the Blue and Grey meet was a great chance to see where
everyone is at while providing friendly competition. In the
women’s events, Jenny Kratch took the victory in the weight
throw improving her distance by over a meter from the previous
year’s Blue and Grey meet. Ciara Stewart, a newcomer to the
throwers, won the shot put with an impressive early season mark of
just over 37 feet.
On the men’s side, sophomore Matt Jones won a close battle
in the weight throw. He beat out teammates Parker Munson and Jeff
Gallagher by a little more than a foot. In the shot put, redshirt
junior Parker Munson took home the title. His toss of 51 feet 5
¾ inches would have been a Moravian record had this been an
official meet! Overall, the many great throws and personal bests
proved we are headed in the right direction going into the
season.
The Blue and Grey intrasquad meet gives athletes a chance to
compete and with our first meet of the season being only three
weeks away, it’s a great way to know we are on track to
having a great season!

2013 Blue & Grey Intrasquad
Meet - November 26, 2013
The Moravian College Track and Field team competed in the annual
Blue-Grey intrasquad meet on Saturday, November 16th in the
ARC. The sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers, and throwers were
split into two teams and competed in eight events (hurdles, shot
put, long jump, 320m dash, weight throw, pole vault, 40m dash, and
the 4x160m relay). The men on the Blue team beat out the Grey
team 91 to 71 while the women on the Blue team also came out with a
victory against the Grey team 84 to 64.
The Blue team’s key victories came from senior Dave
Cariello in the men’s hurdles, senior Yacine Zerdoum in the
320m dash, junior Parker Munson in the shot put, and a sweep in the
40m dash with freshman Matt Barnett, sophomore Albert Myers, and
senior Yacine Zerdoum. Other key performances came from Myers
placing 2nd in the long jump, senior Jeff Gallagher placing 2nd in
the weight throw, freshman Matt Jones placing 3rd in the shot put,
and Cariello placing 3rd in the long jump and tying for 1st in the
pole vault.
The women on the Blue team had key victories from a double
victory by freshman Lauren Suelke in the long jump and 40m dash and
freshman Jackie Finnegan in the shot put. The race of the day
was the showdown between the school record holder in the
women’s outdoor 400m, junior Brielle Sutter, and the school
record holder in the women’s outdoor 400m hurdles, junior
Morgan Redmond, in the 320m dash where Sutter came from behind to
edge Redmond at the line for the victory. Other key
performances came from sophomore Tyler Clore placing 2nd in the
weight throw, sophomore Christelle Reglas placing 2nd in the long
jump and 3rd in the 40m dash, junior Dana Fineman placing 2nd in
the pole vault, freshman Becky Flitcroft and sophomore Meghan
Newman placing 2nd and 3rd in the hurdles.
The Grey team came away with a few victories of their own from
senior Kris Joint in the long jump, senior Tim Lorah in the weight
throw, and sophomore Ryan Karnopp tying for first in the pole
vault. Other key performances from the Grey team included
senior Craig Arner and sophomore Gavin Bailey placing 2nd and 3rd
in the hurdles, freshman KJ Williams placing 3rd in the weight
throw, freshman Greg Cahill placing 2nd in the shot put, while
sophomore Tyler Dwyer and junior Chris Ossont placed 2nd and 3rd in
the 320m dash respectively.
The women on the Grey team also fought their way to victories
from senior Jenny Kratch in the weight throw, junior Hailey Kester
in the pole vault, and junior Morgan Redmond in the hurdles.
Other key performances came from Redmond and sophomore Corinne
Glass placing 2nd and 3rd in the 320m dash, junior Brianna Wright
in the 40m dash, while freshman Casey Raymond placed 3rd in the
pole vault and long jump. The meet ended with the 4x160m
relays. Both Blue and Grey had four mixed gender teams
competing. The Grey relay team of Ossont, Bailey, freshman
Lauren White, and Redmond finished first. The Blue relay team
of freshman Mike Guarino, senior Jenni Smilgis, sophomore John
Barr, and Barnett finished in second while the Grey relay team of
Raymond, Joint, Dwyer, and freshman Kiara Bright finished in
third.
Overall, both teams provided a promising look into the 2013-2014
track and field season for the Hounds! They open the indoor
season at Lehigh University December 6th and 7th.

2013 NCAA Indoor Championships -
March 11, 2013
This year the NCAAs were out in Naperville, IL at North Central
College’s brand new indoor facility. Alli Vanek (PV)
and Micah Leonard (TJ) were our lone qualifiers, but both
represented the ‘Hounds well!
On Friday morning, Alli started us off in the vault. It
was her first NCAA meet, and although she had been jumping well the
previous two meets (consecutive indoor PRs at ECACs and Columbia of
12’2” and 12’6”) even she would admit she
was pretty nervous going in. Her warm ups weren’t crisp
and consequently she opened a little lower than we would have
initially liked to – but we at least wanted to get the
confidence and a bar at a big meet. While many of the other
favorites were missing on initial attempts, Alli wound up going in
clean at the first three heights (11’3.5’’,
11’9.5’’, 12’3’’) which put her
in a great position, especially if she could make the
12’7.5” bar, which would have been her PR.
However, after the long warm up she lost a little steam in her legs
and wasn’t able to make that 3.85m bar. Alli ended up
finishing 7th a great accomplishment for her first experience
at the NCAA Championships, and it wound up being her 2nd
highest clearance indoors. The upper 12’s, possibly
even 13’ are both real possibilities for Alli this
spring.
On Saturday, it was the 4-time All American, Micah Leonard’s
turn in the triple jump. Unlike in the men’s triple and
long jump competitions, the women weren’t reaching their
qualifying marks nearly as early or often, so a big jump early
really set the tone for your position the rest of the
competition. Micah opened with a very strong jump of
38’8.5” which all but guaranteed her a spot in finals
even after just one attempt. As the competition played out,
there was one clear favorite ahead of everyone else, then a group
of five (including Micah) who were all consistently jumping right
around the upper 38 to lower 39 range throughout the
competition.
Micah ended up improving on her first jump by going
38’11” on her 5th which held for 5th place,
however, she was only 2.25 inches from finishing 2nd, which shows
just how close that middle pack of athletes were!
The 5th place finish wound up being Micah’s best ever at
NCAAs, and her 3rd furthest triple jump of her well-decorated
career! Micah and Alli will both take a little downtime to
recover, while the rest of the team is getting geared up for our
first meet at Washington and Lee in Lexington, VA.

Conference Championships -
February 27, 2013
We went into this indoor season with high expectations even
after losing a tremendous amount of talent in our senior class from
last year. We returned a young and talented sprint crew, a
lot of depth in the pole vault, and some rising talent in the
distances and as it turns out, they were the keys to our success
thus far this season.
As with any conference meet, it’s nearly impossible to
highlight each athlete and their accomplishments, but here were
just a few of the performances that stood out. It’s
hard not to start off with Micah, who scissor kicked her way
to 2nd in the high jump, and easily won the long and
triple. Freshman Corinne Glass was 4th in the 60, and
hit ECAC qualifying marks in the 200 (26.89) and 400 (60.13) to win
both events and earn Freshman of the Year honors. Brielle
Sutter is coming on after a quad injury that hampered her training
much of this season, but still managed to place 4th
and 2nd in the 400 (60.52) and 200 (26.98). Morgan
Redmond was just out-leaned in the 60 hurdles, but joined teammate
Brianna Wright to finish 1-3 in the 60, and set a new conference
meet record of 4:06 in the 4x4 along with Brielle and Corinne.
Allissa Hoffman had a huge PR of nearly 35 feet in the shot put
to place 4th, and Jenny Kratch continued her strong ascent in the
weight by finishing 4th with a throw just under 42 feet.
In the distances Emily Lambright was just a second off her PR in
the mile, and doubled back with a 2:28 800 just behind teammate
Jenni Smilgis’ 2:27. Jessie Goldberg and Claire
Del Casale ran 19:11 and 19:17 respectively in the 5k in a very
fast race, and the 4x8 squad of Jenni, Devon Bedell, Alyssa Tallon,
and pole valuter Ally Vanek pulled off an upset with a 2nd
place finish! Finally, as usual, our pole vaulters stepped up
with Ally winning, Hailey nearly missing an NCAA qualifying bar,
Dana making ECACs at 11’ and Amanda Smilgis wrapping
up 5th place to give us 26 points in that event alone!
In the end, we wound up winning by 49 points in a meet that was
extremely tight until the 200 and 4x800 gave us the boost we
needed.
We’re off to the Armory this weekend for the ECACs
with our sprint crew (Brianna 60, 4x4, Brielle 4x4, Corinne 4x4,
400, 200, and Morgan 60h, 4x4) pole vaulters Ally, Hailey, and
Dana, and then of course Micah in both of the horizontal
jumps. Right now Micah is ranked 8th in the country with
her 38’9” tj from Princeton, but we’re trying to
get another 3-4 inches out of her in the long jump to ensure she
makes it to NCAAs in both. At the moment, Ally Vanek is
qualified in the pole vault, although both she and Hailey could use
the 12’ bar to guarantee they make the trip to Chicago for
NCAAs, although both are fully capable and have had many near
misses at even higher bars this season. With the 4x400,
indoor NCAAs may be one year away, but we’re seeing how close
we can get to 4:00 flat when they’re peaked and much fresher
than when they ran the 4:06 at conferences.
