Volleyball Opens 2014 with Sweep of Alvernia

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season strong at the 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere, defeating Alvernia University in three straight sets in pool-play on Friday afternoon.

The Hounds (1-0) would waste no time getting their first win of the season, taking the first set, 25-21. Moravian settled in and won the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-18.

"The team came together nicely, battling point for point until making a hard push at the end to finish strong," commented Head Coach Shelley Bauder on seeing her team capitalize on all the hard work they put in this preseason.

The Blue and Grey aren't done yet, they resume pool play Friday night at 8:00 p.m. against College of New Rochelle. With another win they hope to find themselves in the championship bracket on Saturday. The teams will be re-pooled based on the standings of day one to see who will be playing for the title.

Leading the attack was freshmen outside hitter Mary Zacher who had nine kills and three service aces. Junior middle blocker Victoria Bobyak added five kills and six service aces to help cruise the Greyhounds into victory. Senior outside hitter Kelianne Comitalo and sophomore middle blocker Taylor Kornmann each contributed four kills.

Junior setter Megan Szkolnicki led eight different teammates to a kill, and she had 20 assists and three service aces on the match.

"I'm pleased with our serving, we started to get more aggressive which earned us double digits in service aces," stated Bauder.
