Hounds Use Wild 3rd Set to Earn 3-1 Win at FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team rallied after dropping the first set to defeated FDU-Florham, 3-1, in non-conference action Thursday evening.

The Devils took the opening set, 25-11, before the Greyhounds earn 25-23, 34-32, 25-20 set wins to capture the overall match and improve to 14-14 on the season. FDU-Florham was in control of the first game the entire way, and the Devils had a quick 3-0 lead in the second set. Senior defensive specialist Andrea Giardina helped the Hounds score four straight points on the serve, and later in the set She had another five points on the serve as the Greyhounds moved ahead 15-14 in the set before winning 25-23.

The wild third set began with the Devils opening a 5-2 lead. The Blue and Grey tied the set at 2-2 with sophomore outside hitter Mary Zacher on the serve. The rest of the game did not see either team lead by more than two points. FDU-Florham had the first chance to win the set up 25-24 but Moravian scored twice to keep the game going. The Hounds had four set points while the Devils had three before the Greyhounds earned the win on a pair of kills from Zacher.

The Hounds jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fourth set and Moravian saw the lead down to a point, 15-14, before winning 25-20 to capture the match.

Junior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann led the Greyhounds with a match-high 22 kills to go along with five digs and a block while Zacher contributed 15 kills and 18 digs. Junior opposite hitter Jaclyn Smith, sophomore outside hitter Jordyn Jacques and freshman middle blocker Erin Tiger each had six kills for Moravian with Tiger adding four digs and three blocks.

Senior setter Megan Szkolnicki paced the Greyhounds' offense with 44 assists to go with 13 digs and five kills while sophomore libero Jean Markovic had 33 digs to move past 900 digs in her career, and she also had five assists. Giardina finished with six digs while freshman outside hitter Rachel Farmer added three digs.

The Hounds are scheduled to play a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday, October 24 as part of Moravian's Homecoming festivities. The Greyhounds will play Baruch (N.Y.) College at 11:00 a.m. at Gettysburg College at 3:00 p.m. in Johnston Hall Both of the schools will also take on Muhlenberg College in the other two matches scheduled for Saturday.
