Greyhounds Top Widener in Five Sets

CHESTER, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team rallied in the fifth set to earn a 3-2 non-conference victory at Widener University Monday evening.

The Greyhounds, now 10-10 overall, trailed 12-4 in the opening set before scoring 12 of 16 points to knot the score at 16-16. Moravian pulled ahead 20-19 before Widener ended up winning the set, 25-23. The second set would be close early on before the Greyhounds snapped a 6-6 tie, and Moravian went on to even the match with a 25-16 set win.

The Blue and Grey would also capture the third set, 25-15, before the Pride won the fourth set, 25-21, to force the deciding fifth game. With Moravian trailing 5-4 in the last season, the Greyhounds scored six straight points with freshman defensive specialist Alexis Szaro behind the service line to take a 10-5 lead. Moravian went on to win the set, 15-10, and claim the match victory.

Junior outside hitter Mary Zacher led the Greyhounds with 18 kills to go along with 10 digs and a service ace while senior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann had 11 kills and six blocks as she moved to fourth in school history with 271 blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Erin Tiger contributed 10 kills and two blocks while freshman outside hitter Brooke Kusmider had 10 kills and five digs in the match.

Freshman setter Victoria Kauffman led the Moravian offense with 44 assists and three service aces to go along with seven digs and a pair of blocks while junior libero Jean Markovic led the squad with 25 digs as she moved into sixth in school history with 1,313 digs in her career. Szaro finished with 10 digs and a service ace while senior right side hitter Jaclyn Smith had four kills, two digs and two blocks.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Thursday, October 6 in a non-conference match at Gwynedd Mercy University beginning at 7:00 p.m.
