Greyhounds Rally in Final Set to Earn Non-Conference Win at Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball squad rallied in both the third and fourth sets to earn a 3-1 victory at Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference action Thursday evening.

The Greyhounds, who improve to 11-10 on the season, trailed the entire first set except for a quick tie at 4-4, falling 25-22 to open the contest. Junior libero Jean Markovic served up eight straight points to give Moravian a 15-3 lead in the second set as Moravian evened the match with a 25-10 set win.

The Blue and Grey had an early 4-0 lead in the third set and stretched the advantage to 23-15 before the Griffins scored nine of 10 points to even the score at 24-24. The Hounds finished off the set with the final two points for a 26-24 set victory to take a 2-1 lead. Gwynedd-Mercy led 17-9 in the fourth set before Moravian closed within 21-19. After the Griffins took a 22-19 lead, Moravian scored the final six points to earn the victory, 25-22, and win the match.

Sophomore middle blocker Erin Tiger and freshman outside hitter Brooke Kusmider each had 13 kills to lead the Moravian offense with Tiger adding five blocks and Kusmider contributing seven digs. Senior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann had 12 kills and a pair of blocks for the Greyhounds while junior outside hitter Mary Zacher added 11 kills and 13 digs.

Freshman setter Victoria Kauffman controlled Moravian's offense with 50 assists to go with nine digs, four service aces and two kills while Markovic turned in a team-high 23 digs to go with two kills. Senior right side hitter Jaclyn Smith added five kills for the Hounds while freshman defensive specialist Alexis Szaro contributed 13 digs and junior defensive specialist Ashton Galasso had four digs.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, October 8 in a non-conference match versus FDU-Florham beginning at 11:30 a.m. in Johnston Hall.
