Volleyball Splits on Second Day of Wilkes Colonel Clash

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday in the second day of action at the Wilkes University Colonel Clash as the Greyhounds defeated Alfred State College, 3-2, before falling to Keystone College, 3-2, to finish the tournament.

The Hounds opened the second day of action with a 29-27, 25-23, 15-25, 25-27, 15-13 versus Alfred State. Sophomore middle blocker Erin Tiger led Moravian with 17 kills while junior outside hitter Mary Zacher had 16 kills and 15 digs. Senior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann contributed 11 kills, three blocks and three digs while freshman outside hitter Brooke Kusmider added seven kills and 22 digs.

Freshman setter Victoria Kauffman ran the offense with 55 assists to go with two kills and two digs while junior libero Jean Markovic added 32 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Alexis Szaro had eight digs in the win.

Moravian would play its second hard-fought, five-set match of the day against Keystone, falling 25-15, 12-25, 19-25, 25-16, 15-13. Kornmann had a team-high 13 kills in the match to go with a pair of blocks to move into a tie for third in school history with 288 career blocks. Zacher contributed 2 kills and eight digs while Tiger added nine kills and a block.

Kauffman had 43 more assists as she became the ninth player in school history to reach 1,000 assists with 1,007 so far in 2016, and Kauffman also had six digs, two kills and a pair of service aces in the match. Markovic added 19 digs while Kusmider has 12 digs, six kills and four service aces. Szaro contributed eight digs and a pair of service aces while senior right side hitter Jaclyn Smith had two blocks.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, October 26 in a non-conference match at Penn State Berks beginning at 7:00 p.m.
