Top 10 Games of 2016-17 - #8 Women's Volleyball Rallies Past Medaille on Opening Night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian College is continuing its look back at its 2016-17 athletic campaign. The next event in the top 10 exciting games from the past year is our No. 8 highlight – the women's volleyball team rallying from a 2-1 set deficit to defeat Medaille (N.Y.) College, 3-2, on the opening night of the 2016 season.

The Greyhounds, who finished the year at 19-15 overall, used the victory to go 4-0 during the 14th Annual Greyhound Premiere hosted by Moravian, and it was also one of three 3-2 victories by the squad last year.

On the evening of September 2, the Hounds faced Medaille in the second match of the opening day of competition in the Greyhound Premiere after Moravian began the 2016 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Centenary (N.J.) University. The Mavericks would jump out to an early lead in the first set and post a 25-18 win to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Hounds responded in the second set with a 25-20 win to even the match at 1-1 but Medaille won a close third set, 25-22, to move back in front. Moravian answered back with a 25-22 win in the fourth set to knot the match again at 2-2, and the Greyhounds fought hard to get a 15-13 win in the third set and take the match victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Erin Tiger and junior outside hitter Mary Zacher each had 16 kills to lead Moravian in the win with Zacher adding 19 digs and Tiger contributing two blocks. Senior middle blocker Taylor Kornmann had 12 kills and three service aces in the contest while senior outside hitter Jaclyn Smith and freshman outside hitter Brooke Kusmider both had six kills with Smith adding two blocks and a pair of service aces and Kusmider contributing nine digs.

Freshman setter Victoria Kauffman hit the 50-assist mark for the first time in her career with 51 assists in the match to go along with six digs and a kill while junior libero Jean Markovic added a team-high 25 digs to go with three service aces. Freshman defensive specialist Alexis Szaro contributed eight digs for the Hounds.
