Greyhounds Fall to DeSales in Three Sets

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team finished its five-match season-opening home stand with a 3-0 loss to DeSales University in non-conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening.

he first set went back-and-forth with the Bulldogs taking a 12-9 lead before the Greyhounds rallied back and tied the set at 15-15. DeSales moved in front by three points again; however, Moravian rallied again to knot the score at 22-22 before the Bulldogs pulled out a 25-23 win.

The Blue and Grey trailed 5-1 in the second set before sophomore defensive specialist Alexis Szaro came on to serve the Greyhounds into a 6-5 lead. The Hounds eventually lead 19-14 in the second game before DeSales scored nine straight points and pull ahead 23-19. Moravian would force the set beyond the normal win of 25 points before the Bulldogs took the set 27-25.

DeSales jumped out to another 5-1 lead in the third set before sophomore outside hitter Brooke Kusmider erved the Greyhounds back to an 8-8 tie. Moravian eventually took an 18-17 lead before the Bulldogs pulled away again for the 25-21 set win to earn the sweep.

Senior outside hitter Mary Zacher led the Hounds with 13 kills to move into tenth place in school history with 1,060 career kills, and she added eight digs against the Bulldogs. Junior middle blocker Erin Tiger contributed nine kills while Kusmider and freshman middle blocker Madi Anslow both had five kills with Kusmider adding four digs and Anslow picking up three blocks.

Sophomore setter Victoria Kauffman led the Moravian offense with 33 assists to go with five digs and two kills while senior libero Jean Markovic had 18 digs. Freshman outside hitter Corinne Frick contributed four kills and five digs in the contest while Szaro had six digs and freshman right side hitter Emerson Gieryic added two kills and two digs.

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, September 9 in a tri-match at FDU-Florham with St. Joseph's (L.I.) College starting at 10:00 a.m.
