Greyhounds' Rally Falls Short in Five Set Match with Montclair State

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team fell behind by two sets before forcing a fifth and deciding set in a 3-2 non-conference loss to Montclair State University Saturday morning in Johnston Hall to begin the Homecoming action.

The Greyhounds were tied 4-4 early in the first set before the Red Hawks pulled away, eventually winning the opening set 25-22. Montclair State also took the second set by the same score after breaking a 20-20 tie with five of the final seven points in the set. The third set would go back-and-forth before the Blue and Grey lead 20-17. The Red Hawks came back and tied the set at 22-22 before Moravian scored the final three points for a 25-22 win.

The Hounds had an early 8-3 lead in the fourth set behind the serving of freshman outside hitter Kirah Dreisbach but Montclair State came back to knot the score at 14-14. Moravian pulled away and held on for a 25-23 set victory to force the fifth set. The Red Hawks took an early lead in the final set and won 15-12 to capture the match.

Senior outside hitter Brooke Kusmider lead the Greyhounds with 17 kills to go with 10 digs and a pair of assists while senior middle blocker Erin Tiger had 14 kills, four digs and four service aces in the contest. Dreisbach contributed eight kills and seven digs while freshman middle blocker Renee Mapa had seven kills and three blocks.

Junior setter Victoria Kauffman directed the Moravian offense with 45 assists to go with seven digs and a pair of kills while sophomore defensive specialist Jasmine Pavlinsky had 10 digs. Freshman libero Ally Locy added nine digs while junior defensive specialist Alexis Szaro had six digs.

The Hounds are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, October 23 in the team's final non-conference match of 2018 when the squad heads to Penn State-Berks for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
