Greyhounds Split with Juniata in 2021 Home Opener to Win Weekend Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball squad bounced back from a 4-0 shutout loss in the opening game to defeat Juniata College, 8-1, in the nightcap of the 2021 home opener at Gillespie Field Sunday afternoon as the Greyhounds ended up winning three of the four games in the weekend series.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • The Eagles scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning, and Juniata added two runs in the sixth inning and one more in the eighth for a 4-0 shutout
  • Senior Kevin Brandt made his first career start on the mound in the contest and had three strikeouts in six innings of action. Senior Kyle Serman tossed the final three innings with four strikeouts

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Graduate student third baseman Ian Csencsits led off with a single and moved to third on a double by freshman catcher Brett Stewart. An error on a ball hit by junior designated hitter Nick Montone scored both Csencsits and Stewart while sophomore shortstop Mason Fisher had an RBI single to plate Montone. Junior center fielder Robert Roman had an RBI sacrifice fly to finish the scoring
  • Moravian tacked on a run in the bottom of the third inning when Stewart laced a 3-1 pitch for a line drive homer to left field, his first collegiate home run
  • The Blue and Grey pushed the edge to 6-0 with a run in the fourth inning when freshman second baseman Paul Croyle led off with a triple and scored on an RBI single from Fisher
  • Juniata scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fifth frame
  • The Hounds finished the scoring with two runs on the sixth inning on a two RBI single by Roman with the bases loaded on a ball that looked like it would be an out to finish the inning before the ball hit second base and bounced into center field
  • Senior Rodney Berger earned the win on the mound with four strikeouts in six innings of work. Freshman pitcher David Ciaccio had one strikeout in an inning of action 

First for the Hounds

  • Moravian had seven players make their Gillespie Field debuts including Fisher, Croyle, Stewart, Montone, Ciaccio, right fielder Matt Madigan and left fielder Connor Wengryn as the Greyhounds played at home for the first time since May 4, 2019

Inside the Numbers

  • Based on the Landmark Conference set-up for the 2021 season, Sunday's first game was a nine-inning contest while the second game was scheduled for seven innings
  • Moravian had just nine hits in the doubleheader with senior first baseman Brett Moyer, Stewart and Fisher each collecting two hits
