Greyhounds Split Opening Doubleheader with Scranton in Landmark Conference Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball team posted an 8-3 win in the opening game before falling 4-0 in the nightcap in a Landmark Conference doubleheader versus The University of Scranton in Landmark Conference action at Gillespie Field Saturday to begin a four-game series with the Royals.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • Scranton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the first game, and the Royals added two more tuns in the top of the third for a 3-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds scored six times in the bottom of the fifth with a run of six straight hits to take a 6-3 lead. Senior right fielder Thomas Philipps got things going with a one-out double and senior shortstop Michael Miceli followed with a single. Junior center fielder Robert Roman hit an RBI single that scored Philipps while senior outfielder Carmine Palummo put down a bunt hit to bring Miceli across the plate. Graduate student second baseman Ian Csencsits knotted the score with an RBI double while senior first baseman Brett Moyer connected on an RBI single to score Palummo and put Moravian ahead for good. Sophomore catcher Derek Holmes added an RBI ground out before freshman designated hitter Brett Stewart ripped an RBI single to score Moyer with the final run of the inning.
  • The Blue and Grey added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame as Palummo connected on an RBI single and Csencsits had an RBI sacrifice fly
  • Junior Eddie Olsen improved to 2-0 on the mound as he struck out four batters in five innings of work. Senior Kyle Serman earned his first career saves, tossing the final four innings in the opener

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Royals scored three times in the top of the fourth inning and once more in the sixth for the only four runs of the contest
  • Senior Rodney Berger took the loss on the mound with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of action

First for the Hounds

  • Sophomores AJ Gordon and Andrew Connallon made their first appearances of the season on the mound for the Hounds, and their first-ever appearances at Gillespie Field
  • Palummo, Holmes, Philipps, junior third baseman David Bertolotti, junior outfielder Elias Engelhardt and freshman infielder Cole Cherkas all played for the first time this spring. For Holmes and Cherkas, it was their Gillespie Field debuts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 17 hits on the afternoon with 13 in the first contest
  • Miceli was 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of runs while Palummo went 3-for-6 with two RBIs. Holmes and Stewart each had two hits in the doubleheader
  • Roman scored twice in the first contest
