Greyhounds Take Nightcap to Earn Series Split with Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball squad used an outstanding pitching performance from freshman David Ciaccio to post a 5-2 win over host The University of Scranton in the nightcap of a Landmark Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening to split the twinbill as well as the four-game conference series. 

How It Happened – Game 1

  • Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and the Royals extended the advantage to 2-0 with another run in the second inning
  • The Greyhounds scored twice in the top half of the third to knot the opener at 2-2. Graduate student infielder Ian Csencsits had an RBI sacrifice fly before sophomore catcher Derek Holmes connected on an RBI single
  • The Royals answered back with five runs in the bottom of the third to retake a 7-2 lead
  • Moravian plated three runs in the top of the fourth to pull within 7-5. Senior outfielder Thomas Philipps led off with a solo home run to left field while sophomore shortstop Mason Fisher had an RBI single. Senior outfielder Carmine Palummo drove in a run on a fielder's choice
  • The Hounds tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth to tie the contest again at 7-7. Sophomore infielder Chris Pow had a pinch-hit RBI double while junior outfielder Robert Roman added an RBI infield single
  • Scranton retook the lead with three runs in the home half of the fifth, and the Royals finished off the scoring with a run in the sixth
  • Moravian had the tying run at the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh with Scranton recorded the final out of the contest
  • Freshman Cameron Cooper made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds while junior Kyle Petsch and sophomore Garrison Koch both pitched in relief 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the nightcap as senior first baseman Brett Moyer connected on an RBI double
  • Moravian doubled the edge to 2-0 in the top of the second when Csensits connected on an RBI sacrifice fly after Philipps led off the frame with a triple
  • The Blue & Grey added a run in the top of the third inning on an RBI sacrifice fly from Moyer
  • Scranton would get on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning
  • The Hounds scored twice in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 5-1 when Pow connected on a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded
  • Ciaccio made his first career start on the mound in the second contest, allowing just two hits while striking out nine batters in 5.2 innings
  • Scranton loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before senior Kyle Serman picked up his third strikeout of the contest to record his second save of the year

First for the Hounds

  • Cooper's start on the mound in the opener was the first of his collegiate career
  • Philipps' homer in the first game was the first of his career
  • Pow saw his first action of the season in the opener and made his first start of the year in game two for the Greyhounds 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 23 hits in the two games with Palummo and Moyer each going 4-for-7. Palummo scored twice and Moyer drove in two runs. Pow was 3-for-7 with three RBIs while Roman, Holmes, Philipps and senior shortstop Michael Miceli each had two hits
  • Csencsits connected on two RBIs in the doubleheader, and he had four assists in the field to move into eighth in school history with 238 assists
  • Palummo moved into sole possession of 10th place in school history in career stolen bases, now with 37
