Moravian Splits Landmark Conference Doubleheader with Susquehanna on Senior Day

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College baseball squad split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with visiting Susquehanna University, falling in the first game 4-3 before winning the second contest 3-2, Saturday at Gillespie Field as the Greyhounds celebrated Senior Day for both the Class of 2020 and 2021. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The River Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning
  • The Hounds answered with two runs in the fifth to make it a 3-2 contest when sophomore designated hitter Derek Holmes ripped a two-RBI single with the bases loaded
  • Susquehanna scored what ended up being the winning run in the top of the sixth
  • The Blue and Grey countered with a run in the home half of the sixth as junior catcher Nick Montone raced across the plate on an error but Moravian would not get any closer
  • Senior Rodney Berger made the start on the mound and had four strikeouts in 4.2 innings while sophomore Garrison Koch and senior Kyle Serman each pitched in the contest
  • Prior to the game, Moravian honors Ian Luberti, Connor Morro and Kole Rodrigues from the Class of 2020, infielder Ian Csencsits and outfielder Carmine Palummo from the Class of 2020 who returned to work on their MBAs and play this spring, and Berger, Serman, infielder Michael Miceli and outfielder Thomas Philipps

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior first baseman Brett Moyer, who will be returning in 2022, connected on a solo home run to right field, his first homer of the season and second of his career
  • The River Hawks scored their two runs in the top of the fifth to move ahead 2-1
  • Moravian answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to retake the lead. Holmes led off with a single and raced all the way home on an RBI double from Moyer. Montone would drive in Moyer with the winning run with an RBI double into the corner in right field
  • Junior Eddie Olsen went the distance on the mound for the Blue & Grey with four strikeouts as he improved to 3-1 on the year 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had just 11 hits in the two contests with Montone going 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI
  • Holmes was 3-for-7 with two RBIs while Moyer went 2-for-7 with two RBIs and a homer
