Moravian Falls Twice in Landmark Conference Tournament to End 2021 Season

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The fourth seeded Moravian College baseball squad dropped a pair of games in the Landmark Conference Tournament at Volpe Field in Scranton Saturday to end the 2021 season after losses to the top seeded Royals, 4-3, and sixth seed Susquehanna University, 11-4.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double from senior first baseman Brett Moyer
  • The Royals knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Scranton took a 3-1 lead on a two-run homer on the bottom of the seventh frame
  • Moravian would not the score in the top of the eighth inning as Moyer connected on a two-run homer, his second home run of the season.
  • Scranton would win the game in the bottom of the ninth with two outs
  • Freshman David Ciaccio had three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of action while freshman Cameron Cooper recorded one strikeout in 0.2 innings on the mound. Senior Kyle Serman added one strikeout in 1.2 innings of work 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The River Hawks scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, and Susquehanna added six runs in the top of the fifth for an 8-0 advantage
  • Moravian got on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Graduate student outfielder Carmine Palummo and sophomore second baseman Chris Pow each drew RBI walks while Moyer had an RBI sacrifice fly
  • The Greyhounds added a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it an 8-4 contest when senior outfielder Thomas Philipps connected on an RBI single
  • Susquehanna finished off the scoring with three runs in the top of the ninth frame
  • Senior Rodney Berger made the start on the mound and had one strikeout in four innings of action while senior Kevin Brandt, sophomore AJ Gordon and freshman Aaron Flyte all made appearances on the mound

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 15 hits between the two games with Moyer going 3-for-6 with four RBIs, two runs, a double and a homer. Junior catcher Nick Montone was 3-for-7 with a run while Pow, Philipps and sophomore designated hitter Derek Holmes all had two hits
  • Palummo had a hit, an RBI and a stolen base to finish his career with 48 stolen bases to finish fifth in school history
