HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- The Moravian University baseball team earned its first victory of the 2022 season with a 1-0 shutout over host Hampden-Sydney (Va.) College Sunday afternoon to close out the non-conference series to begin the year.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored what ended up being the only run of the day in the top of the first inning. Junior second baseman Chris Pow connected on a two-out single to left center field, and he moved into scoring position on a single to left center by senior first baseman Brett Moyer. Junior catcher Derek Holmes followed with an RBI single to right center field as Pow raced across the plate
  • Sophomore pitcher David Ciaccio made the start on the mound for the Hounds, and he was perfect through the first three innings. Ciaccio would get out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth inning with a double play, and he posted his fifth and final strikeout of the game followed by a ground out in the bottom of the seventh to work out of a bases loaded jam. Ciaccio faced a total of 25 batters in seven innings for the victory
  • Junior pitcher Garrison Koch tossed the final two innings to record his first career save, and Koch had one strikeout in his appearance

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had nine hits on the afternoon to finish the weekend series with 34 hits while the Tigers had just 20 hits during the three games
  • Moyer was 2-for-3 on the day while Pow and sophomore left fielder David Olsakowski were both 2-for-4
  • The Hounds defense turned a pair of double plays in the contest
  • The shutout was the first for the Greyhounds since a 15-0 win over New England College on March 1, 2020 at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Moravian hasn't had a 1-0 shutout since a 1-0, 10-inning win over The Catholic University of America on May 10, 2019, in the opening round of the Landmark Conference Tournament at The University of Scranton on a walk-off homer by Austin Markowski. That game was also a three-hit shutout
