Greyhounds Split with Calvin (Mich.) at RussMatt Invitational

DAVENPORT, Fla. --- The Moravian University baseball team split a doubleheader with Calvin (Mich.) College that saw both teams rally from deficits to earn victories with the Greyhounds winning the opener 9-7 and the Knights taking the nightcap, 6-5 in eight innings. 

How It Happened – Game 1

  • Calvin opened the twinbill with seven runs in the top of the first inning. However, those would be the only runs the Greyhounds' pitching staff gave up in the game, allowing just nine men to reach base in the rest of the contest
  • The Hounds scored once in the bottom of the first to make it a 7-1 game. Sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan led off with a double, and he scored on an error
  • Madigan was also involved in the scoring in the second for Moravian as he connected on an RBI single to scored senior third baseman David Bertolotti
  • The Blue and Grey pulled within 7-3 with another run in the home half of the third inning. Junior catcher Derek Holmes singled with one out and raced home on an RBI single from senior first baseman Brett Moyer
  • Moravian took the lead for the first time with a six-run fifth inning. Junior second baseman Chris Pow crossed the plate on an error while sophomore pinch hitter Cole Cherkas hit an RBI single to scored Holmes. Bertolotti reached on another error that allowed Moyer to score before senior outfielder Robert Roman hit an RBI single that scored freshman pinch runner Jaden Clements. Pow finished off the inning with a two-RBI single that chased Roman and senior outfielder Elias Engelhardt across the plate
  • Sophomore David Ciaccio made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds, and he allowed seven runs, just three earned, on 12 hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Junior Kenny Kunzman tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit to pick up his first win of his career 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in the second contest
  • The Blue and Grey answered with a five-run top of the third to build a 5-1 lead. Roman led off with single and took second on an error. Madigan followed with an RBI single to score Roman. Holmes gave Moravian the lead with an RBI double to center field, and Moyer chased in Holmes across the plate. Sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski connected on a two-run homer to left field to end the scoring in the inning. It was Olsakowski's second career home run
  • Calvin scored once in the bottom of the sixth and three more times in the bottom of the seventh inning to knot the score at 5-5 and force extra innings
  • The Knights plated the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to end the doubleheader
  • Junior Tyler Valentine started on the mound for the Greyhounds, allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of action. Senior Leo Andreoli tossed two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout while junior AJ Gordon pitched 1.1 innings. Junior Andrew Connallon finished the final third of an inning

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 21 hits in the doubleheader with Roman going 4-for-6 with a pair of runs and an RBI
  • Holmes finished the day at 4-for-7 with three runs, an RBI and a double while Moyer had a 4-for-8 day with two runs, two RBIs and a double
  • Madigan had three hits, two RBIs, a run and a double while Pow added two hits, two RBIs and a run. Olsakowski also had two RBIs on his home run
  • The Hounds stranded 12 runners on base including seven in the second game
