Hounds Split with Concordia-Moorhead at RussMatt Invitational

AUBURNDALE, Fla. --- The Moravian University baseball squad split a doubleheader with Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) College with the Greyhounds coming from behind to win the opener 12-9 and the Cobbers taking the second contest, 5-4. 

How It Happened – Game 1

  • Concordia-Moorhead scored twice in the top of the first inning in the opener for a quick 2-0 edge
  • The Hounds answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning as junior catcher Derek Holmes hit an RBI groundout to score sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan, who had reached on an error. Senior first baseman Brett Moyer followed with an RBI single to chase junior designated hitter Chris Pow across the plate after Pow was drawn a walk earlier in the inning
  • The Cobbers plated three runs in the top of the third inning to move back ahead 5-2
  • Once again, Moravian answered in the bottom half of the inning, this time with eight runs to take a 10-5 lead. Madigan drew a leadoff walk and raced home on a throwing error after a stolen bases while junior second baseman Mason Fisher scored on an RBI single from Pow. Senior outfielder Elias Engelhardt had an RBI single to score Pow. Senior outfielder Robert Roman gave the Blue and Grey the lead for good with a two-RBI single while Fisher finished off the inning with a three-RBI double
  • The Greyhounds stretched the advantage to 12-5 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore shortstop Paul Croyle connected on a two-run homer, the first home run of his collegiate career
  • Concordia-Moorhead had two runs in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the seventh to finish off the scoring
  • Sophomore Aaron Flyte made the start on the mound for Moravian and had three strikeouts in three innings of action while junior Garrison Koch registered two strikeouts in the final four innings to earn his second win of the season 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Cobbers struck first in the second game with a run in the bottom of the fourth
  • Moravian scored twice in the top of the fifth to pull ahead 2-1 when Madigan connected on an RBI single, and Fisher ripped an RBI double
  • Concordia-Moorhead knotted the score at 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth
  • The Greyhounds added another run in the sixth frame to retake a 3-2 edge when Holmes hit a leadoff triple and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Moyer
  • The Cobbers plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-3 advantage
  • The Hounds' final run came in the seventh on an RBI single by Pow
  • Senior Kevin Brandt made the start on the mound for Moravian and recorded one strikeout in 3.1 innings of action while junior Kenny Kunzman had one strikeout in the final 2.2 innings 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 18 hits in the doubleheader with Holmes going 4-for-7 with two runs, an RBI and a triple and Fisher having a 3-for-5 day with three runs and three RBIs
  • Moyer, Roman and Pow all had two hits with Roman and Pow both driving in runs. Moyer had one RBI
  • Madigan scored four runs to go with a hit and an RBI
