Hounds Split Landmark Conference Doubleheader with Juniata

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad split their 2022 opening Landmark Conference doubleheader with Juniata College at Gillespie Field on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 8-2, then coming from behind to claim a 9-5 victory over the Eagles in the nightcap.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • After a scoreless first frame, Juniata scored a run in the top of the second inning and then tacked on another in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead after four innings
  • The Eagles plated four runners in the top half of the sixth inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, junior catcher Derek Holmes connected for his fourth home run of the year with a two-run homer to right field that brought in junior second baseman Chris Pow to bring the Hounds within four runs, 6-2
  • Juniata plated the final two runs of the game to hand Moravian an 8-2 loss
  • Sophomore David Ciaccio got the start in game one, throwing five innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Aaron Flyte was the first to enter in relief, throwing two innings and allowing two earned runs on one hit and three strikeouts while senior Kevin Brandt pitched one inning, not allowing a hit and had one strikeout 

How It Happened – Game 2

  • The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard first in game two when sophomore left fielder David Olsakowski recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Holmes across the plate to give Moravian a 1-0 advantage in the second frame
  • Juniata countered with two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead and added two in the fourth and another in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1
  • Moravian's bats exploded and the Blue and Grey scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior right fielder Robert Roman earned an RBI with a walk followed by a two-RBI double from sophomore center fielder Matt Madigan down the left-field line to put the score 5-4. Fisher doubled to center that plated a runner to tie the ball game, then Moyer singled into center field to score another and put the Greyhounds ahead 5-4. Olsakowski flew out to center field for a sacrifice fly to bring in another run and then senior designated hitter Elias Engelhardt tripled to right field that scored the final two runs of the game, extending the Moravian advantage to 9-5 after the seventh inning
  • Junior Noah Ingalls started game two for the Blue and Grey and threw six innings, allowing five earned runs on ten hits and walking two batters. Brandt entered in relief and tossed three innings while striking out four batters and allowing just one hit. Brandt earned his first win of the year

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds tallied 12 hits between both games with Holmes finishing the day going 3-for-6 with a homer, a double, four walks, three runs scored and two RBIs while Madigan went 3-for-9 with a couple of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Holmes also threw out three Eagles that were caught stealing
  • Engelhardt and Moyer each turned in a pair of hits with Engelhardt hitting a triple that drove in two runs and crossed the plate himself as Moyer recorded a double, an RBI and scored a run
  • Fisher's lone hit was a double which earned him an RBI and followed that up by scoring a run. Pow scored once for the Greyhounds
