Greyhounds' Rally Comes Up Short in One Run Loss at Alvernia

READING, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team rallied from a 5-0 deficit but ended up falling to host Alvernia University, 6-5, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Golden Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to open a 1-0 lead
  • Alvernia added four more runs in bottom half of the fourth for a 5-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds cracked onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning with three runs to cut the deficit to 5-3. Sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan led off with a single, and he raced home from third base on an RBI single by junior shortstop Mason Fisher. After a double by junior second baseman Chris Pow, junior catcher Derek Holmes drove in Fisher with an RBI ground out. Graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer connected on an RBI double to chase Pow across the plate
  • The Golden Wolves got a run back in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 6-3 game
  • The Blue and Grey scored once in the top of the eighth to move back within two runs at 6-4. Fisher led off the frame with a bunt single, and he came home on another RBI double from Moyer
  • Moravian finished off the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth inning as the game ended with the tying run on third base. Senior outfielder Robert Roman connected on an RBI ground out to score sophomore pinch runner Patrick Benolken 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had nine hits in the game with Fisher going 3-for-5 to go with two runs and an RBI while Moyer was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles
  • Madigan, Pow, senior third baseman David Bertolotti and sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski each had one hit
  • Junior Noah Ingalls made the start on the mound, allowing five runs to go with three strikeouts in five innings of action. Junior Ethan Weber tossed the final three innings, and he recorded one strikeout while allowing a run
