Moravian Scores Twice in Ninth Frame for Walk-Off Win Over Muhlenberg

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a 9-8 victory over rival Muhlenberg College in non-conference action at Gillespie Field Wednesday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Mules scored the opening run of the contest in the top of the first inning, and the Mules added another run in the top of the second for a 2-0 edge
  • The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Graduate student Brett Moyer drew a walk to start the frame, and he trotted home from third on an RBI sacrifice fly from senior third baseman David Bertolotti
  • Moravian plated five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to move in front, 6-2. Bertolotti led off with a walk while sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn singled. An error would allow Bertolotti to race home while Wengryn crossed the plate on an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan. Junior shortstop Mason Fisher followed with a three-run homer to left field, the second homer of the season for Fisher
  • Muhlenberg countered with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to retake the lead at 7-6
  • The Hounds knotted the score at 7-7 with a run in the home half of the seventh. Fisher drew a one-out walk and eventually crossed the plate on an RBI single by Moyer
  • The Mules pushed the go ahead run across the plate in the top of the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk
  • Moravian scored twice in the ninth for the walk-off win. Madigan started the frame with a single, and he scored the tying run on a two-out RBI single from junior designated hitter Derek Holmes. Senior outfielder Elias Engelhardt would drive in freshman pinch runner Ayden Dunbar with the winning run with a single down the left field line on the first pitch of his at-bat

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had eight hits in the game with Engelhardt going 2-for-2 with the winning RBI after entering the line-up midway through the contest. Madigan also had two hits to go with a pair of runs and an RBI
  • Fisher scored twice to go with his home run and three RBIs while Wengryn, Moyer and Holmes each had one hit and an RBI with Moyer and Wengryn also scoring a run
  • Bertolotti and freshman outfielder Nick Henry each crossed the plate once
  • The Hounds pitched by committee with eight hurlers heading to the mound. Sophomore Aaron Flyte earned the victory as tossed a scoreless top of the ninth. Sophomore David Ciaccio made the start for Moravian and had five strikeouts in two innings of work while graduate student Kevin Brandt had three strikeouts in his inning on the hill. Freshman Matt Snyder tossed two innings with a pair of strikeouts while juniors Tyler Valentine and Ethan Weber each registered one strikeout in their appearances. Senior Leo Andreoli and junior Kenny Kunzman also appeared on the mound for Moravian
