Greyhounds Drop Doubleheader in Final Games of Landmark Series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team suffered a pair of Landmark Conference losses to The Catholic University of America, falling 7-3 in game one and 9-3 in game two, at Gillespie Field on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning
  • The Hounds got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth frame to cut the deficit to 3-1. Senior outfielder Robert Roman started the inning with a double down the right-field line, and he raced home on a two-out RBI double to left-center from graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer
  • Moravian knotted the score at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Roman started things again with a single, and he moved over to third on a single by junior shortstop Mason Fisher. Junior second baseman Chris Pow chased Roman across the plate with an RBI groundout while Fisher scampered home on an RBI groundout by Moyer
  • Catholic scored four times in the top of the seventh to move back ahead
  • Senior Eddie Olsen made the start on the mound for the Blue and Grey in the opener, and he had four strikeouts in five innings of action. Sophomore David Ciaccio took the loss as he struck out two batters in two innings of work while graduate student Kevin Brandt and junior Ethan Weber both pitched one inning with Weber striking out one batter

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Catholic took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the final game of the series, and the Cardinals extended their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the second frame
  • The Greyhounds got their first run of the game in the fifth when Roman dropped down a bunt for a single that plated freshman left fielder Nick Henry to put the score at 3-1
  • Moravian made it 3-2 with a sacrifice fly recorded by sophomore third baseman Paul Croyle that brought Pow to cross the plate
  • The Cardinals added a single run in the top of the seventh before Fisher singled up the middle for RBI that scored the Greyhounds' final run of the game to put the score at 4-3
  • Catholic tacked on four runs in the eighth frame and one more in the ninth to conclude the scoring
  • Freshman Matt Snyder started on the hill for the Hounds, and he had two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of action. Junior Garrison Koch tossed 3.1 innings followed by Brandt, who threw 0.1 innings with one strikeout. Junior Kenny Kunzman hurled the final 1.2 innings and recorded one strikeout

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 19 hits in the doubleheader and two Greyhounds each had four hits apiece. Roman and Moyer each went 4-for-8 on the afternoon with Roman adding a double, two runs and an RBI while Moyer produced two RBIs and a double
  • Fisher put together a three-hit performance, going 3-for-9 with an RBI and a run as sophomores Matt Madigan and Croyle, and junior designated hitter Derek Holmes each had two hits with Madigan adding a double and Croyle contributing a double and an RBI
  • Sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn recorded a base knock and sophomore designated hitter Cole Cherkas legged out a double
