Moravian Falls in Late Innings to Penn State Abington on the Road

JENKINTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad saw its five-game winning streak come to a close with a 17-14 loss at Penn State Abington Wednesday afternoon with the Nittany Lions scoring eight runs late.

How It Happened

  • The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning
  • The Greyhounds got onto the scoreboard in the top of the second inning with a run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore outfielder David Olsakowski that scored graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer, who had been hit by a pitch to start the frame
  • Moravian scored eight runs in the top of the third inning to take a 9-3 advantage. Sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan drew a walk to lead off the frame before scoring on an RBI groundout by junior shortstop Mason Fisher. Moyer was hit by another pitch and raced home from second base on an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Paul Croyle. Olsakowski ripped a two-RBI single that scored Croyle and junior second baseman Chris Pow, who had walked, while sophomore outfielder Patrick Benolken connected on an RBI double to bring in sophomore catcher Connor Wengryn, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the frame. Madigan came back to the plate and hit a two-RBI single to chase Olsakowski and Wengryn home, and he scored on an RBI single by Fisher for the final run of the inning
  • Penn State Abington answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the third, and another run in the fourth inning to cut the Blue and Grey's edge to 9-6
  • The Greyhounds pushed two runs home in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 11-6. Olsakowski began the inning with a walk before scoring from second base on a bunt hit from Fisher and an error by the Nittany Lions on the play. Pow drove in Madigan with an RBI single for the other run
  • Penn State Abington responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make it 11-9
  • Moravian scored a run in the top of the sixth when Wengryn led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly off Benolken's bat
  • The Hounds extended the lead to 13-9 with another run in the top of the seventh as sophomore pinch hitter Cole Cherkas reached on an infield single and scored on an RBI single from Pow
  • The Nittany Lions scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at 13-13
  • The Blue and Grey moved back in front with a run in the top of the eighth for a 14-13 edge. Benolken singled with two outs, stole second and race home on an RBI double from Madigan
  • Penn State Abington retook the lead with a four-run eighth frame to take a 17-14 advantage
  • The Hounds would bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth before the game ended

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits in the game with Madigan and Pow both going 3-for-5. Madigan contributed three RBIs, three runs and a double while Pow had two RBIs, a double and a run. Benolken was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and a double while Croyle went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Fisher also had two hits and two RBIs while Wengryn, Olsakowski and Moyer all scored twice
  • Junior Tyler Valentine made the start on the mound for Moravian, and he had one strikeout in two innings of action. Junior Kenny Kunzman tossed one inning while junior Andrew Connallon pitched 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Junior Ethan Weber recorded a pair of strikeouts in two innings of action while graduate student Kevin Brandt tossed two-thirds of an inning. Junior Garrison Koch had one strikeout in an inning on the mound
