ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team earned a Landmark Conference victory and series win over Elizabethtown College, 6-1, in a six-inning game shortened due to rain on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds got things going in the top of the first inning with sophomore outfielder Matt Madigan reaching based on an error and advancing to second base and scoring on an RBI single to left field from junior designated hitter Derek Holmes putting the Hounds up 1-0
  • Elizabethtown would counter with a run of their own in the bottom of the first frame, which would be their lone run of the game
  • After a scoreless second inning, Moravian put four runs across the plate in the top half of the third. Senior outfielder Robert Roman led things off with a walk and advanced to second base after a failed pick-off attempt. Madigan then plated Roman with an RBI single to left field to put the Hounds back in front 2-1. Holmes' second hit of the game would make him the 38th Greyhound to reach 100 career hits and put runners on first and second base. Graduate student first baseman Brett Moyer then singled to load the bases which brought up sophomore shortstop Mason Fisher recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice to put Moravian up 3-1. Junior second baseman Chris Pow then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Holmes and extended the Greyhounds' lead to 4-1. After Fisher stole second, senior third baseman David Bertolotti singled through the right side that scored Fisher and gave the Blue and Grey a 5-1 advantage
  • Moravian would score once more in the top half of the sixth frame. After two quick outs, Madigan reached first on an infield single to third base and then Madigan swiped second base and Holmes was intentionally walked. Moyer came to the plate and had an RBI single up the middle to move Holmes to third base and score Madigan to put the Hounds ahead 6-1
  • Sophomore pitcher David Ciaccio got the start for the Greyhounds, throwing all 5.1 innings with just two hits, seven strikeouts and one earned run

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 10 hits in the game with four different Greyhounds earning two hits each. Holmes went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Holmes has tied the school record with 67 hits in a season, which was set in 2012 by Dave Zubia, and reached 100 career hits, making him the 38th Greyhound program history to reach that milestone
  • Madigan, Moyer and Bertolotti also record two hits, with Madigan scoring three times and driving in an RBI and Moyer plating a runner
  • Fisher contributed one hit, an RBI and scored once while senior catcher Nick Montone reached base safely and Pow drove in an RBI on a sacrifice fly
