WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The fourth seed Moravian University field hockey squad dropped a 4-2 decision to third seed and host The Catholic University of America in the 2022 Landmark Conference Championship match Saturday afternoon.
How It Happened
- The Cardinals got on the scoreboard at the eight-minute mark in the opening quarter, and Catholic scored again 41 seconds later to lead 2-0 after 15 minutes of action
- Catholic pushed its edge to 3-0 just 2:36 into the second quarter. The Cardinals had a chance to extend the lead in the 20th minute; however, Moravian senior goalie Brooke Wilkinson stopped a penalty stroke attempt to keep the score at 3-0
- Moravian netted a goal in the 27th minute as freshman forward Brooke Sodl knocked in a pass from senior midfielder Emily Wells to make it a 3-1 match
- With just 21 seconds until the intermission, the Greyhounds found the cage again on a penalty corner as junior defender Jenna Segrave drilled a long shot off the insert from Wells to set the score at 3-2 for the Cardinals heading into the intermission
- The Cardinals pushed the edge back to two at 4-2 with goal in the 40th minute
- Neither squad found the cage in the fourth quarter
Inside the Numbers
- Sodl's goal was her second of the season while Segrave notched her third goal of the year
- Wells' two assists gave her nine in 2022 and 21 for her career, moving her into a tie for second in program history. Wells completed her career with 55 points, which is tied for 12th in school history
- Wilkinson recorded four saves in the match
- Segrave made a defensive save, her fifth defensive stop of the season
- Catholic recorded a 22-8 advantage in shots and a 10-7 edge in penalty corners
- Moravian was making its first-ever appearance in the conference championship match in the program's fifth postseason berth
