Drew Proves To Be Too Much as Moravian Falls, 69-60

The Moravian College men's basketball team fell to Landmark Conference rival Drew University, 69-60 Saturday afternoon. Junior guard D.J. Strayhorn tied his career-high of 28 points.

Junior guard Garrett Johnson would get Moravian (8-8, 3-2) on the board first with a three-pointer. After a layup from senior forward Dara Mc Keon, Strayhorn responded with a three-pointer of his own. Sophomore guard John Ford and senior guard Asmar Capers would hit back-to-back three's to give the Rangers (3-13, 1-4) a 10-6 lead three minutes in.

The greyhounds would tie the game back up after Strayhorn drove to the basket for an easy lay in. After two free throws from Capers, Drew would retake the lead at 13-11 with 13:18 remaining in the half. The Rangers would push their lead to four points after a steal and layup by junior guard Terrell Brown. Junior forward Aaron Thieme would end the Hounds scoreless streak with a layup.

Ford would respond with a three pointer, and Strayhorn would come right back with a jumper to make the score 20-15, Drew with nine minutes remaining in the half. Capers would push the Rangers lead to 23-15 with six minutes to go after a deep three-pointer. Sophomore guard Bobby Falconiero would get the steal and the lay in for Drew to push its lead to 27-17 with just under four minutes to go in the first half.

Strayhorn would drive to the hoop and make the basket while drawing the foul. He would convert the free throw to make the score 27-22 with three minutes left in the first. Ford would put Drew up 31-24 after a three from the corner with 1:16 left. Strayhorn would answer right back with a three of his own. The Rangers would end up taking a 33-28 lead into the locker room.

Moravian shot 35-percent from the field while Drew shot 39-percent from the field in the first half. The Greyhounds held the rebounding advantage at 20 to 19, but the Rangers had three less turnovers. Strayhorn led Moravian with 17 first half points while Ford led Drew with 11 points and four rebounds.

Ford would get the Rangers on the board first in the second half with two free throws. After a steal by Johnson, Strayhorn would go the other and make the jumper. Sophomore forward Cameron Cullen would make a layup on the next possession to cut Moravian's deficit to one points and 35-34 with 17 minutes remaining. Strayhorn would then make the easy layup as the Greyhounds would retake the lead with 15:48 left in the contest.

Drew would then start a 12-3 run at the 14:17 mark of the second half and end with a 51-39 lead with 8:25 remaining in the contest. Freshman guard Izel Dickerson would bring the Greyhounds back within single-digits with a free throw to make it 51-42 with seven minutes left in the game. Capers would respond with a three-pointer to put Drew back up by 12 points.

Dickerson would hit the reverse layup with just under four minutes to go to make the score 55-48, Drew. Strayhorn would cut the deficit to five points on the next possession with a layup. Falconiero answered back with a three-pointer, and Ford would drive to a basket after a Moravian turnover, make the layup and draw the foul. He would convert the free throw for a 61-50 lead with 2:41 left in the game.

Strayhorn would hit a deep three from straight away to make the score 63-55, Drew with 1:36 left. That wouldn't be enough for Moravian as they would go onto lose 69-60.

Johnson ended the game with 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Thieme had eight points and seven boards. Sophomore guard Kenny Gula finished with six points while Dickerson had five points.

Ford led the Rangers with 29 points and eight rebounds while Capers had 20 points and six boards.

Moravian shot 34-percent from the field while Drew shot 38-percent from the field for the game. Drew held the rebound edge at 39 to 38, and had one less turnover.

Moravian travels to Juniata College Friday, January 20th for a Landmark Conference contest set for 5:30 p.m.
