Greyhounds Drop Close Landmark Conference Game at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian College men's basketball team had a two-point lead with just under four minutes remaining but ended up dropping a close 58-56 Landmark Conference game at The Catholic University of America on Friday evening. 

How It Happened

  • Senior guard Keith Otto hit a three-pointer to open the scoring, and the Greyhounds had a 7-4 lead after a jumper from sophomore guard Nate Dougherty. After the Cardinals took a 9-7 advantage, Moravian netted six straight points with freshman guard Alex Dietz netting a pair of free throws with a 13-9 edge with 9:41 before the intermission
  • Freshman forward Mike DiPietro and Dietz hit back-to-back three-pointers as the Blue and Grey let 22-16 with 4:56 left in the opening half, and a three-point play by sophomore Greg Eck had Moravian up 33-26 with less than a minute before halftime. Otto scored the final points of the half as the Hounds headed to the locker room with a 35-29 lead
  • Catholic came back onto the court and scored the first seven points of the second half to move ahead 36-35. Dietz knotted the score with a free throw before the Cardinals built a four-point lead, 42-38 with just under 11 minutes remaining
  • The Greyhounds would retake the lead at 46-45 on a three-pointer by freshman guard/forward James Thompson with 8:12 to go, and Thompson made it a three-point lead 30 seconds later with two free throws. The Cardinals would tie the game at 49-49 before senior guard Matt O'Connor connected on a three-pointer for a 52-49 edge with 5:26 remaining. DiPietro had the Hounds up 55-53 with another three-pointer at the 3:51 mark; however, Moravian scored just one point the rest of the way as Catholic scored the game's final field goal with 2:35 still to play

Firsts for the Hounds

  • Dietz scored in double figures for the first time in his collegiate career with 11 points

Inside the Numbers

  • O'Connor paced the Greyhounds with 12 points while Otto tied his career-high with a team-best eight rebounds. Otto also dished out a career-high four assists
  • DiPietro netted a career-high seven points while Dougherty had a career-best five rebounds
  • It was a tale of two halves for the Hounds from the floor with Moravian going 13-for-27 (48.1 percent) in the first 20 minutes of action and just 6-for-24 (25 percent) in the second half
