Dave Whelan joins the Moravian College men's basketball staff for a third year during 2021-22 season.

Whelan's previous coaching experience includes a stint at Western Connecticut State University where helped the program produce three NCAA Tournament Teams including one Elite Eight appearance and a 94-19 record in his first stint at Western Connecticut. When he returned to the school he helped the program produce a 43-14 mark and an ECAC New England Championship. In between his stops at Western Connecticut, Whelan was the head boy's basketball coach at Brookfield (Conn.) High School, where he led the team to two winning seasons and berths in the state's Class M Torunament. Prior to that, Whelan coached Ocean County (N.J.) Colleges' men's team for three seasons.

Whelan played collegiately at Wagner College. After graduation, he played in the semi-pro Eastern League for seven years for the Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, Brooklyn and Long Island franchises. He also had tryouts with Memphis (ABA) and Cleveland (NBA).

Whelan attended both Wagner College and Long Island University before receiving a Ph.D. from the City University of New York. He has had a long academic career in higher education.
