Moravian Men Earn First Win of 2022 with Victory over Saint Joseph's (Maine)

DAVENPORT, Fla. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the 2022 season with an 18-11 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's (Maine) College in a contest played at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds netted the first four goals of the match with freshman midfielder Steven Salica scoring his first career goal just 1:15 into the contest. Freshman midfielder Aaron Judge followed with his first career tally while senior attacks Griffin LeBlond and Connor James found the net for the 4-0 lead, and James' goal was scored with a man-advantage. After the Monks got on the scoreboard, junior midfielder Jack Bakey and James scored to give the Blue and Grey a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes of action
  • Moravian also netted the first three goals of the second quarter with sophomore midfielder Joey Furino, Bakey and LeBlond all scoring. LeBlond's tally came with a man-up. Saint Joseph's would score four goals in the final 6:03 of the first half; however, sophomore attack Brennan Fluehr and LeBlond found the cage for the Hounds as the Moravian headed to the locker room with an 11-5 edge
  • Sophomore attack Trevor Dzama opened the scoring in the third quarter, and graduate student defender Jimmy Schicke and James scored to make it a 14-5 lead. James tallied one more goal with 1:07 to go in the third quarter as the Hounds led 15-6 after 45 minutes of play
  • The Monks picked up five goals in the final 15 minutes, but Moravian added three more with Salica, Fluehr and James all hitting the cage

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had nine different players score goals with James netting a game-high five goals to go with three assists and four ground balls while LeBlond had a hat trick. Salica, Fluehr and Bakey each had two goals while Dzama had one goal and a career-high seven assists, the sixth most in a match in program history, to go along with four ground balls
  • Judge, Furino and Schicke each had one goal while senior midfielder Kevin Berlin and freshman midfielder Aden Moskovitz each had one assist. Schicke also contributed four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Graduate student Tyler James set the school record with 25 faceoff wins as he went 25-for-31 on faceoffs, and James also scooped up 17 ground balls, tied for the second most in a match in program history
  • Junior midfielder Shane Cassel added seven ground balls while sophomore long stick midfielder Matt Baer had five ground balls
  • Junior goalie Sean DeMott registered four saves for his first win of the season and the sixth of his career
  • Moravian had a 53-25 advantage in ground balls and a 50-27 edge in shots. The Hounds were also 18-for-19 on clearing attempts while going 2-for-4 in extra-man opportunities
