Hounds Net Seven Unanswered Goals in 4th & James Hits Two Milestones in Landmark Conference Win at Goucher

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian University men's lacrosse squad broke open a tie match with seven goals in the fourth quarter to defeat host Goucher College, 12-5, in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Gophers scored the first two goals of the afternoon before senior midfielder Zach Bergeron netted Moravian's first marker of the match. Goucher would add another goal to hold a 3-1 edge after 15 minutes of action
  • The Blue and Grey scored twice in the second quarter to knot the score at 3-3 at halftime with sophomore attack Brennan Fluehr hitting the net once and senior attack Connor James netting a man-up goal to become the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career goals.
  • The Hounds scored two quick goals in the first two minutes of the second half with freshman midfielder Aaron Judge and James scoring within 36 seconds to take a 5-3 edge. Goucher answered with two goals to tie the match again at 5-5 after 45 minutes of play
  • Moravian netted seven goals in the final 15 minutes to earn its second straight Landmark Conference victory. Bergeron put the Greyhounds in the lead for good three and a half minutes into the period before freshman midfielder Steven Salica connected on back-to-back goals. Sophomore attack Trevor Dzama scored on a man-up shot at the 5:11 mark, and he found the cage again 10 seconds later. James made it 11-5 with 2:44 to go as he netted his school record 43rd goal of the season. Dzama finished off the scoring with just under a minute and a half to go 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had six different players score a goal Dzama contributing three goals and an assist while James netting three goals. Bergeron and Salica both scored twice with Bergeron adding three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while Fluehr and Judge each tallied one goal
  • Senior attack Griffin LeBlond and senior midfielder Kevin Berlin both had one assist
  • Freshman goalie Thomas Lee made four saves in the victory, his fifth of the season
  • Senior midfielder Ben Walek went 18-for-21 on face-offs, and he scooped up a team-high 11 ground balls while graduate students defender Jimmy Schicke and midfielder Tyler James each had four ground balls. Sophomore defender Matt Baer contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers while junior midfielder Shane Cassel and sophomore defender Jacob Stetson both had three ground balls
  • The Hounds had a 58-24 advantage in shots, a 37-18 edge in ground balls and were 15-for-16 on clears in the match
