Jaindl & Mastro Honored as Landmark Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. --- Moravian College graduate student Greg Jaindl and senior thrower Shane Mastro have been honored as the Landmark Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their performances last weekend.

Jaindl captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Greyhound Invitational in his first race in over a year with a time of 9:24.70 and he also took first in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:04.93. Jaindl also ran a leg on one of the Greyhounds' 4x400-meter relay squads and helped the quartet finish second in 3:42.90.

"Greg has been doing his clinical rotation in New Jersey the past month, so he' only been able to join us once in the past month," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann." Despite that, the long tempos and mock steeplechase sessions he's doing are at a level I've never seen from him before, so I'm not surprised by his success. It's been tough to work on technique in the steeplechase while he's been gone so he showed some rust in that on Saturday. With that being said, to run a 9:24 steeple by himself, and then double back about 25 minutes later and sit and kick like that in the 1,500 shows his fitness level. He closed his last 400 in 58 seconds so the time he ran isn't remotely close to what he can run in either event.

"We're hoping we have a chance to find him the competition he needs to pull him to the NCAA marks because he's at a fitness level he's never been at before and I'm confident he has the ability to contend for All-American honors," finished Baumann.

Mastro won the hammer throw at the Greyhound Invitational with a personal best toss of 46.07 meters (151-1), and he also captured the shot put with a career-best toss of 15.39 meters (50-6), the fourth best distance in school history.

"Shane has been having some great practices and lifting big numbers in the weight room these past few weeks, so we knew that he was in great shape coming into the Greyhound meet," commented Throwing Coach Jon D'Ottavio. "He finally broke through in the shot put with his last throw going over 15 meters and setting a new personal best of 15.39 meters (50-6). That carried over to the hammer throw where he ended up throwing past his previous personal best three times and again throwing his best on his last throw with a toss of 46.07 meters (151-2). It will be exciting to see where Shane can go this season as he continues to improve his technique and we get into our championship season."

Moravian is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, April 17 when the squad hosts the Coach P Open with action set to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Timothy Breidegam Track.
